Yup, that's exactly how the Oppo behaves... I get the same selection of DSP modes as you, which is normal for a MC input to the processor.
In the Oppo setup menu, there's no selection of MC or Stereo for audio output over HDMI, just Auto, LPCM, Bitsream or Off. That may be different in your newer menus though.
I agree with the suggestion of using a single Coax and a different 861 input for plain 2 channel if you want Trifield and the various DPL modes.
Cheers
George

This confirms my suspicion that the Oppo is still outputting multi-channel audio down the HDMI even though it's playing 2 channel audio. The 861 is then (correctly) offing the available Multi-channel presents. Two options: - Use COAX for 2 channel (Red Book) audio, selected by a different source. - Lobby Oppo to fix the firmware. Perhaps not the news you wanted, but at least we have got to the bottom of it. Regards, Carl

Yes, this is reassuring. I set up a new source with coax for regular CD and I will use HDMI for SACD although I can't get Trifield.
New issue has arisen. Coax out sound level is +20 than my other sources. How can either adjust input sensitivity for the coax input to reduce volume or set volume differently for this source. Mconfig has master volume but not by source. I thought that I saw a sensitivity adjustment but I can't find it now that I need it.

Hi again, Another thought; you could setup an 861 source and specify D1 rather than MMHR (MD1 if using coax). With D1 being only for 2 channel the 861 would ignore D2 and D3 and thus offer all 2 channel presets. Regards, Carl

I thought that I saw a sensitivity adjustment but I can't find it now that I need it. Sensitivity is to adjust analogue input gain. A per source digital gain adjustment is not possible. IMHO if Meridian offer this it would be well received by the community. Circa +20 in volume does seem a lot, it worth checking the Opps setting to make sure it is outputting at 0dB in all modes. Try looking at the mix-down settings and HDMI output settings in the Oppo, They dictate what it will do with various different types of media in terms of the number of channels used and how they're decoded.
With vanilla CD and movie soundtracks, you're almost certainly best going over coax, as others have mentioned. The only thing you really want to send something over HDMI through the HD621 for is hi-res material whose copy protection prevents transmission over coax, e.g., SACD (set the Oppo to decode to PCM), DVD-A, Blu-Ray Audio, and HD movie soundtracks.

Hello DaveN, I'm presuming that you have RJ45 MMHR between HD621 and 861... I would try connecting the 1/2 coaxial output on HD621 and a digital input on 861 and create new Source in HD621 and 861 for this new input. I would also try creating a 2 channel type in HD621 as per FAO configure a HD621 for use in two channel system Best regards Frank

I know I'm stating the obvious here, but for the avoidance of doubt; doing this would prevent multi-channel playback.
