I plan to either get converter or use a old 519 I have left from laserdisc days, can set jumpers so that it takes optical in and sends digital out. I used this successfully on a Bluray player to connect to old 565 which had the optical input already used for satellite.
I thought that I could then look out for an unloved 519 if this works. So in summary, Apple TV to 519 to DSP33s, controlled for volume by VMSR.
I'd need a few power sockets, but should be superior sound to say to a BOSE soundtouch 30, which costs similar moneyish.
What do you think, will it work?

No 18 in the Hall of fame I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best: GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone
To avoid the complications of your proposal that may or may not work and given the current price of unloved 565s and 562s, you could get one of those as a controller. That solution provides outstanding sound quality in my office system.

2. Is anyone also controlling devices without RS232, such as cable boxes and TV's. If so, did you buy an IP2IR as well, or is there a smarter solution I'm missing?
Any thoughts on Q2?

Do we know what this entails? I rarely use this frankly because I 'need' the ability to customize the labels (hopefully without have to ship you virtual buttons lol
Does the RS232 port on a 861 give information like source labelling?
I am busy with finding a way for source labeling into my DSP5200SL speakers from a 861v4 through a AC12. I have connected the DIN5 and a RS232 cable between the AC12 and 861v4.
I hope with the new firmware 8.1 that it also would send source labeling over RS232. Then I could use it, and with the virtualMSR should it be possible to.
When you develop for iOS, you target iPhone, iPad or universal app. iPhone apps run on iPad, universal runs on both, but iPad apps only run on iPad. The apps you mention target iPad I believe.
Whilst you can retarget apps, it's not a case of just selecting a different option. There is much needed to do to fit different screen sizes. It was bad enough targeting both sizes of iPhone and the iPad even before the new sizes.
Whilst there are development techniques to ease this, I still think that there will be many a groan from developers on having a further set of sizes to support. As yet, I've not looked at how the new sizes actually appear to the developer. Retina was a cheat, and as far as the app was concerned, nothing changed screen size, and only 2x icons/images (file or programatically) were needed to make apps truly retina.
So whilst technically it's possible, effort wise it may not be worthwhile. But then, Apple have ways of forcing developers hands...
