I watched The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Extended Edition) last night in 2D and I really enjoyed it.
This is the film that I watched previously in 3D @ 48fps in the cinema and felt like many that (1) the presentation was very unnatural and (2) the film was too long with overly drawn out sequences.
But last night, with an extra 13 minutes on the running time, I thought it was really good. Almost all of the extra material (with the exception of the King Goblin's song) added important information to the plot and the film seemed to flow much better.
If you like Tolkien, recommended.

Keep going George, there's barely a dud Studio Ghibli film out there. Since enjoying Princess Mononoke & seeing the other Ghibli-related comments I've seen a few more. Spirited Away, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Grave Of The Fireflies & Tales From Earthsea. Every one an absolute belter; I'm going to keep going too, as suggested by dpstjp!

Lagaan: Once Upon A Time In India. Absolutely tremendous. You need to be open to the Bollywood vibe and there are some musical numbers in it, which normally in a film I find to be about as enjoyable as a bite from a puff adder, but the whole thing is fantastic. It's only available on DVD & the picture quality isn't quite out of the top drawer but never mind about that; the film is imbued with tremendous energy and the song & dance numbers are beautiful to watch with their riot of colour & sound. The entire soundtrack is absolutely stunning; just about the best I've ever come across. Yes, it's that good. At the end of the film (over 3.5 hrs worth), your DSPs will be very relieved as they will have had a very thorough workout. The music is driven along by quite brilliant percussion & the OST is an essential purchase, IMO. Very highly recommended.

It's been a long time since anyone posted on this theme. Is this an indictment of the rubbish films being produced a the moment?
I would have thought that SOMEONE would produce a film that stretched the boundaries of our super systems.
I have not enjoyed many of the films that have been suggested here, but one recommendation that I liked was Gravity - in 3D. Having watched both 2D and 3D I reckon the 3D takes it way beyond the experience of 2D - and I recommend again for that purpose - and the surround sound it quite good too.
One more esoteric film I may suggest is "Swann in Love" - Jeremy Irons speaking French is a bit disconcerting but if you get over that it is an engrossing old style movie. I saw it first in a small niche theatre/cinema in Soho many many years ago that an old girlfriend dragged me off to see. I was circumspect at the time but at the end was truly impressed.

Sometimes you just need to look a little harder than at other times, that's all. 3 great films I've seen over the last couple of weeks (admittedly none of them recent): The Wages Of Fear In The Mood For Love The Battle Of Algiers Each one a stunner.

It's not so much that I actively like foreign language films but I'm slowly working my way through IMDb's Top 250 Films list & it has taken me on paths I never expected to travel down. I'll be putting an Off Topic post about this soon but it's been a fascinating journey.

I found Lee Chang-dong's 'Poetry' moving and rewarding. In terms of pace, perhaps one for those who liked Once Upon a Time in Anatolia. Not one to test out systems, although I was startled by some dogs barking behind me!

Great to have a Korean recommendation. The only Korean filmmaker I know so far is Bong Joon-Ho. Both of the ones by him I've seen (Memories of a Murder, and Mother) were very strong.

Properly calibrated 3D is awesome and brings a film to life I agree with this. Out of curiosity I compared the opening scene from Life of PI in 3D and 2D at the weekend (not than I am a fan of the film). The former was far more involving. (I didn't compare the big set piece scenes where the difference might be even more marked.) I can inhabit a 3D film in a way that is not possible in 2D. However, it is certainly not the case that every time I want to watch a film I would countenance putting on a pair of big awkward glasses over my glasses! It can be quite tiring. Nor put up with my noisy ceiling mounted projector in 3D mode (something I must sort out if possible.)
