I somewhat agree with John. It seems better to me to have about the same speakers around you. So than one crossover setting is no problem at all. Different crossover frequencys would be good for people from the stereo+ corner who have big mains, and put a very small center and surrounds with it. Than they have to either choose large or go with the crossover suited for the smaller center/surrounds.

In my case, fronts are large, center is good down to 50Hz and sides/rears good to 80Hz.
How much difference does setting the crossover at 80Hz versus 50Hz really make?
I have noticed that all modes for music, except for direct, send some signal to the sub (even stereo with the front L+R set to large), so the bass rollover to sub in these modes is based on something other than the crossover setting.

Jaco, in the scenario you describe, with equal size speakers, I agree that separate crossover points is not necessary. Many systems like mine though have large mains with small center and surround speakers. Separate crossovers would allow one to tailor the system so each large speaker is used to its full capability and the small speakers are not given frequencies they can't reproduce. It seems simple in theory but I'm not an engineer.

I see the reason different crossover frequencys are usefull. It is more that for a good multi channel image the same speakers around you seem to work better.
My center is the 'best' (read the most expensive) speaker in my setup. That does not happen a lot i think. The -3db point of all the speakers is within 5 db from each other (around 40 Hz).
