Also Disable the "Put the hard Disks to Sleep when Possible" option

If playing a video does the trick, then simply choose a long film and set it to Auto-Replay at the end

Turn off or Sleep the actual Monitor though

Not sure if this will allow the Backup to complete, but it's worth a try based on your observations

And obviously, an Incremental Backup should be quicker than a new Backup

I have to admit, I slightly struggle to see how playing a film is any different to backing up in terms of processing. There may be a buffer that VLC writes to a hard drive which Control:Mac doesn't?

Toggling the "Hard drive to sleep" option had made no difference.

As I say, it's worth a try (set Movie to Replay) based on your observations thus far.

It must be said that Mavericks 10.9 is MUCH more aggressive about Power Management for Foreground versus Background applications than any OS before it and I doubt that Control:Mac has taken that into account.

So, if you wish to try, I would set the Movie to Replay... and then set Control:Mac to Backup and leave it as the Foreground application... then leave Display to Sleep... but everything else stays on.

Won't hurt to try.

And if it doesn't work, you've already seen how well FreeFileSync works to copy a Library... so maybe use that as your Backup routine rather than the compromised one within Control:Mac. I certainly gave up using it a long time ago. Cloning plus File Sync much is quicker, more robust with Audit Logs for my needs... but YMMV.

Agreed Ronnie.

The reason I went back to Control:Mac was I took a FreeFileSync clone down to the IoW. You may remember it didn't work with my (very) old MacMini.

When I found a program that did work (thanks to your advice) I copied the files that were different (including by time) from the clone over to the TwinStore but found that the incremental files (i.e. the ones not on the TwinStore) then did not appear on the legacy Sooloos system.

Going forwards it may be interesting to try using my MD600 to clone the drives for me, but I have different sized drives in the IoW to those in my MD600, and don't really see any need to clutter up my IoW drive with unneeded MP3s.

Many thanks,

D

[Edit] It's worth noting that the Restore on the old MacMini went without a hitch, other than it stopped working overnight. I finally discovered this was actually Mrs P who was disturbed by the noise of the hard drive just before she retired for the evening and switching it off. She looked blankly at me when I pointed out that if she left it running overnight whilst asleep the noise would stop a lot sooner. [/Edit]

On my MD600 it has to be restarted for the incremental files to show up.

Do you recall if you did a restart?

I did, yes. Both TwinStore and Source:Five (as Core).

did you also copy over the musiccollection.db file as an incremental difference ?

If not then you would need to re-generate that file to pick the new albums.

I'd need to check the back up log.

Probably not, from the sounds of things.

When you say "regenerate", I presume that one deletes this file manually from the TwinStore (I can't test this, but I'm not convinced I can look into the files on the Source:Five) then reboot the system and force it to recreate the .db file.

I rename it (so I can revert if needed) and on reboot the system will regenerate. I assume it ploughs through the FSE files and builds the db.

Hi Nick,

How long does it take to rebuild the musiccollection.db file (collection size dependent I assume)?

Carl

I've only done it a few times. IIRC it was pretty quick... like just enough time to get a cuppa. It will depend on library size I expect.

Thanks Nick, so just a few minutes - not hours, that's good to know.

Carl
