Wow. First time I've seen our sensitivity to pre-ringing quantified. [Bob] showed with reference to psychoacoustic research from the last 10-15 years that traditional models of hearing needed adjustment in view of these later discoveries in auditory processing, for example showing that our discrimination of time is extraordinary, of the order of 10 microseconds implying an effective perception up to 100kHz even if for example steady state tones are inaudible above 12kHz at standard level.

Sensitivity to time differences of 10 microseconds is largely a binaural phenomenon. I think it is a stretch to imply perception up to 100 kHz.

I wish I had been there... sounded very interesting! The presentation led to a proposal for a high resolution audio practice which could offer higher sound quality while providing economies in data rates, transmission and storage.

(I doubt Bob was claiming monaural 100kHz perception anyway.) We might not be able to hear 100kHz (or even 15kHz), but our *brains* can detect timing differences of that order; which has huge implications for digital filter design, etc.

But isn't that exactly the point? (I doubt Bob was claiming monaural 100kHz perception anyway.) I doubt it too, it's more likely that this is something Martin Colloms inferred from Bob's talk. We might not be able to hear 100kHz (or even 15kHz), but our *brains* can detect timing differences of that order; which has huge implications for digital filter design, etc. Yes, the human auditory system can detect incredibly small time differences, typically 10-20 microseconds when locating a source. Or to put it another way, the time it takes sound to travel 3.4mm.
