Sorry for posting this as a seperate topic, but I seem to be going round in circles. Currently trying to choose a flat panel display but im even having problems trying to buy a suitable HDMI-DVI cable for when I finally come to audition sets.

Can someone please answer these two (simple) questions regarding a G9x:

1. There are 4 scaler options: Deinterlace, 720p, 1080i and Auto. What exactly does auto do and what modes can it output? I am specifically interested in native panel resolution or other modes returned in the EDID.

2. Can someone please confirm that HDCP is only active when a CP disc is inserted. What about from scaled external sources?

Hi Ian,

I think auto would only work if the panel you bought was HDCP. What's "supposed" to happen is that the panel tells the G9x what the best mode is for it to pump out.

Not sure where you are in the UK (I'm in Bristol), but if you want to come round and see a G91 in action with a 504 (including scaling/de-interlacing with a signal from a Sky+ box and TiVo), let me know.

G9X will output the resolution that is requested by the display device EDID via the HDMI connector. 720P and 1080i are for setting the resolution manually if the EDID is incorrect, most are, or if your display device has a DVI input.

I have a theoretical TV, with panel resolution of 1366x768. The TV supports the following resolutions:

EDTV 640/720 x 480p
720 x 576p
HDTV 1920 x1080i
1280 x 720p
VGA 640 x 480 60 Hz
SVGA 800 x 600 60 Hz
XGA 1024 x 768 60 Hz

1. What resolution will be used if G98 is in auto scaling and I use a HDMI->DVI connection?
2. Ditto #1 but for HDMI->HDMI
3. Other than 720p/1080i, can this be overridden?
4. What criteria does the G9x use to choose the auto resolution?
5. Does it make any difference if I am using PAL or NTSC discs or sources?

if the EDID is correctly sent by the display device the output resolution will always be the same: the one from the plasma or DLP.
The main problem is obviously the EDID
The second problem is that effectively we cannot say to the Meridian scaler manually what we exactly want to be outputed by the HDMI output.
because obviously if the plasma is sending correctly the info, the G9x will send the required signal. I think M should provide a manual adjustment like : H:1366 V:768 freq:xx Hz
so that even if the EDID is wrong the info is still sent at the native resolution for the panel. I've told them but didn't have much of the clear response. it cannot be that difficult. it should only be software design. they are well aware EDID problems in a lot of display devices even on Pio 434 apparently there is different batch of them that do not provide the right EDID, some others do but obviously pioneer will not comment....

Ok, so in the case of the above, what will be in the EDID, assuming that it is correct? I thought that somewhere, I read that the EDID was a data structure that contains a list of supported resolutions of the display.

Also, I have had 3 conflicting reports of the circumstances that the EDID is returned. So far, its fairly evenly spread between: The EDID is returned for only HDCP displays (which I believe is incorrect); EDID is returned only by HDMI displays; the EDID is returned by both HDMI and DVI displays.

As far as the native resolution of my theoritical panel is concerned (1366x768), is this resolution allowed over DVI/HDMI or is there a strictly defined set of resolutions allowed and you are not allowed to add to that - ie include an odd native resolution? Checking the HDMI 1.1 specs, 1366x768 is not a listed resolution.
