Hello,

New owner of old DSP5000's here. On a half-whim I bought a pair of DSP5000's. They are 18-bit and a bit tatty, but only cost me 499. A few hours of elbow grease later and all the scratches are gone, the fading is gone, and all polished up to a very respectable finish. Very happy with these!

Anyway, I didn't notice in the auction pictures that these had granite plinths attached to the bottom - came as a little surprise when I went to pick them up. Having looked at other photos I don't see any others with plinths. Am I to take it that these are not Meridian original plinths? Good or bad? Anyone recognise these? I took some snaps:

DSP5000 plinths

I also opened them up to check the electronics, as I am going to assume these are 20 years old. Nothing bad there I can see (apart from the odd spider's web). If you're interested, you can see pics of the guts here:

Next job: replacing the grill cloth...

Welcome to the forum!

The plinths are not originally from Meridian but look to be well made and certainly can't do any harm. Stability is good and may protect the cabinet and grill from the dreaded vacuum cleaner.

Neil

Hi,

Welcome to the forum, I see from the photos you've powered them up. What do you think of the sound?

Carl

Hello Shiggins, I still have trio of 18 bit 5Ks, wired up in my legacy system. They are classics, of course bettered in latest Meridian technology, but I am sure you will be very happy with them.

I am located just down the A3 from you so if you need some help give me a shout.

Best regards
Huw

Loving them so far. Coming from small standmounts (Quad 12l) I am continually impressed by the depth and tightness of the bass. In fact, impressed all round and can't stop listening to music and rediscovering old albums. Something I didn't expect was how well they work at low volumes.

Originally I only came to these forums to see how much I could get for my G08 but ended up getting hooked on the idea of DSPs!

Lovely photographs may I upload them to Duncans info site, link at top of every page.

Using plinths whilst increasing stability is raising a fixed boundary height. It may make little difference, but the relationship between floor and speaker has changed.

That's part of the 'magic' with DSP's.

Glad your enjoying them I had 18 bit 5k's for years and years and I loved them. Then I went a mad with upgrades wink

Regards,
Carl

Thanks for the offer of help, Huw. I had some fun just setting left/right, master/slave, so I'm sure I'll need assistance after the inevitable controller purchase.

Mi', sure, feel free to upload the photos to Duncan's info site. I'd feel slightly honured smile

Was this some monster 13.5 uber-surround-configuration we haven't been told about? Or two 7.2 configurations in different rooms? ;-)

My 5Ks are on similar-looking granite plinths too, though they were a later addition of mine, not bought at the same time.

499 is a super bargain. Well done.

Enjoy the music.

Photos of the innards look fine. It's amazing how well these hold up! I have a pair of 18-bitters too and they still operate well considering they are almost 20 years old!
