Would the upgrade for non SpeakerLink also feature a SpeakerLink upgrade?

Has anyone got a close up of the clamp ring?
I have big lasers and CNC machinery and could maybe make replicas?
I am not sure about a mounting ring on the midrange as it might affect dispersion characteristics , but bass drivers should be no problem...

The actual bass chassis from the legacy speakers are not produced anymore from SEAS since a while.

That's the reason why M made that rings I guess since the SL version to adapt the new bass chassis (doesn't automatically means they are better) on the DSP housing/box.

So there is no need and usage for those rings on legacy DSP except the advantage of a better and more longterm reliable mounting and sealing.

But as the "old" bass chassis are different to the new ones, you can't use the new rings with old bass chassis.

As you say correct, the distance of the chassis to the housing will change, this shouldn't be important on the bass, but could change the mid chassis dispersion characteristics. So I suspect the SE series have also a deeper chassis mounting groove to make space for the rings so finally the chassis is at the same surface/level as without rings.

Many thanks, Paul, for the information. I look forward to hearing the speakers and reading further posts from you concerning technical information and specifications. When will data sheets be out?

I think that the back plates changed at some stage and that this precludes the upgrades being offered to all.

This is due to very slight cabinet differences and tolerances.
But does this have implications for new, non-SE, models?

And I suppose you are also ruling out SEAS changes described by Robert?

We're expecting details of which speakers will be able to have the SE upgrades, but all SpeakerLink variants will be fine.

Some very early legacy models of DSP5200 and DSP8000 may not accept the new electronics, as their internal cabinet dimensions were slightly different from the current cabinets.

Legacy (non-SpeakerLink) DSP5200 and DSP8000 SE upgrades (if possible as above) will include the SpeakerLink upgrade at no additional cost, as it is part of the replacement back-panel.

Clamp rings were first introduced in the DSP8000 Anniversary as a performance improvement, which means that Anniversary owners will be able to upgrade to full SE specification.

Rick,

Is that "may not", or "can not"?

Time to get the chisel out...

Annoyingly I didn't check the serial nos closely on my DSP5k2s when I bought them. The pair's serial number is under 100, as is one of my HCs.

Fingers crossed.

An upgrade just to get SPDIF/comms changed to SL was always said to be prohibitively expensive relative to any SQ or functional gains. So, M never offered it.

However, that the SE Upgrades now offer enough to tip that balance such that it makes a shift to SL for legacy DSP's is terrific news.

We just need to get out and about to hear them now....

We're still waiting for confirmation of precisely which legacy speakers will be able to be upgraded.
It's very likely that some, very early DSP5200 and DSP8000 will not be able to accept the new electronics.

There will be no premium to pay for non-speakerlink speakers when they are upgraded to SE specification. As all speakers will require complete new back panels and this includes the speakerlink connector.

Something to consider though is cabling requirements may change if you upgrade to SE. As speakerlink speakers use BNC rather than Din for their legacy comms connections.
