Have any forum members run a DSP5000 speaker from an analogue, non-Meridian, system using and outboard A/D? If so would they mind sharing their experiences?
Thanks.

Can you be more specific ? What do you mean by analogue system ?
Analogue CD player, preamp, amp, turntable?

I mean the following:
analogue pre-amp (not Meridian) --> A/D --> DSP speakers

Hi Al,
It would work but I recommend that volume control should be performed within the DSP speaker using the Meridian remote control, rather than using pre-amp.
Ideally the pre-amp should be set to fixed full scale output, without over driving the ADC of course.
How it would sound ... all depends on the quality of the sources, pre-amp and ADC.
Are you considering 18 bit or 24 bit DSP5000's?

Thanks for your reply Carl. Yes, signal level to the A/D converter will be kept in check.
I am waiting to hear back from the seller, but most likely the speakers are the older 18 bit versions, which is OK, as they are for use in a second system.

P.S. Are 24 bit upgrades for the DSP5000s still available?

No, if you want 24 bit you need to purchase a 24 bit pair.

Al,
My ha'pennies' worth (and not knowing your sources) is you'd do well to look for (at least) a Meridian 562 of some flavour (I use a 562V in my second system), assuming you have some analogue sources. These can be found very cheaply.
This will pass through digital and do the A/D process as well as allow comms to work properly.
If the speakers are 24-bit I'd look for at least a 568 (assuming stereo and analogue sources).

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.
Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

I just got the serial nos. from the seller, I will contact Meridian to find out whether they are 24 bit or 18 bit.

Thanks for your input dpstjp.
Actually I do own a 541, bought it second hand several years ago to try out. I did not want to use it on account of its age and dated technology. Would it serve as a controller for the DSP5000?
Sources are: CD/DVD/Bluray player, streamer, FM/AM tuner and tape. The streamer is a Musical Fidelity M1 CLIC, which can accommodation all my analogue sources and serve as a a preamp, so I was hoping not to use another preamp like the 541.

I strongly recommend that you request photos of the rear of the DSP5Ks and post them here for an accurate identification re status. Hector
