The MS600 is described as having SL output, the HD621 as having MMHR over RJ45. What is the difference? Can I plug both into a G61R with a single CAT style cable?

Btw, I am thinking of replacing my aging G68 with a G61R, second time it broke. The web site shows the G61R as having SPDIF outputs, but my dealer told me SL and the manual agrees. Right?

SL is 2 channel. MMHR is 8 channel.

Current G61R-SL does not have a MMHR input. Only 861v6 and 861v8 has MMHR input.

Hi,

The G61R v2 (G61RSL) Feb 2010 has SpeakerLink outputs.
However it does not have a MMHR input only the 861v6 and v8 have that.

SpeakerLink
RJ45 Connection
2 Channel Digital Audio
Meridian Comms
Meridian Comms Return
RS232

MMHR
RJ45 Connection
8 Channel Digital Audio

Does that mean that MMHR only supplies digital audio signals (eight wires = 4 x 2-channel SPDIF out and return) and does not transmit any metadata?

So is a comms connection also required between the HD621 and procesor or is metadata multiplexed over one of the MMHR digital audio streams?

My HD621 has 3x Meridian 'blue' cables and a comms cable connected to my G61R MKI processor.

Hi Jon,

SmartLink 3x SPDIF or MMHR has some metadata embedded into the signal which enable the Meridian Processor switch to either Music or Movie layout. I guess this is why Meridian used the term SmartLink.

However, the HD621 still needs a comms connection for source switching, standby etc.

Carl

Another related question occurs to me:

If MMHR is based on AES/EBU (which it is, right?) could one wire a cable to go from MMHR out on an HD621 to a (stereo) SL input?

Obviously only utilising the main stereo pair from the MMHR lines.

Two thoughts on that idea Ludwig:

Is SL encryted the way MMHR outputs are so could the SL receiver handle the input datastream?

Is the SL pair actually the main L&R pair in MMHR so no rewiring would be necessary?

I'm not aware that anyone has dissected a MMHR yet work out which pins carry what signals. I think the assumption of it using one twisted pair per AES channel is a fare one.

We know which pins are used for SpeakerLink AES channel, from this it should be possible, though experimentation, to identify the which MMHR pairs carry which channels.

Mined, I'd not chop up Meridian SL cable to find out, it would be cheep cat5 UTP patch lead.

Carl

I am curious what you think the net Sound Quality advantage would be to this approach?

Does MMHR have technical advantage over SL from HD621 to M controller like the new G65 (less noise, less jitter, or what) that would lead to noticeable sound improvement? How would you articulate that improvement (soundstage, imaging, etc)?

I noticed in Duncan's Meridian Info section on HD621 there is document outlining how to configure HD621 for a 2 channel system? Does that assume you will be using one of the SL outputs not MMHR?

Reason I ask is if you buy a G65 and HD621 and want to start out just 2 channel and grow into multichannel as toy budget allows, can you use MMHR or do you have to use SL 1/2 for example for 2 channel system to start?

HD621 has no SL outputs. It only has MMHR and 3x SPDIF Coax.

If you want to use an AES connection then MMHR would be the only way to get this out of the HD621.

Am I anyway right that MMHR is AES? I'm not entirely sure about that and couldn't find a definite answer in the data sheets.
