It mentions missiles... no mention of tweeters though ... grin

Here is a article Truth about Beryllium_Diaphragms from 2009.
They refer that even in very old yamaha speakers (1987...) Beryllium was used. But Technology have moved and hopefully Marketing too.

SEAS also have a Beryllium chassis and SEAS is used in Meridian speakers - so maybe that will used. As long as you don't play to loud the tweeter will not burn and harm you wink

Are the DSP present at the show, can somebody listen?

sleep Meh ... nothing innovative but a positive step.

Looking forward to next innovative Meridian product - at least I see positive step forward by M so that is good.

From the What HiFi website:

British audio specialist Meridian is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the launch of its first digital speaker, and to mark the occasion it has unveiled a Special Edition series of DSP digital active models.

It was back in 1989 that Meridian intoduced the world's first digital speaker in the shape of the legendary D600. Now it has developed a trio of SE models which feature a beryllium domed tweeter, new electronics and driver clamp rings to deliver the "highest-performing Meridian DSP speaker yet".

There are three Special Edition models available, the DSP8000, DSP7200 and DSP5200, all of which (shown above) are on display in the Meridian room here at CES. Standard finishes are gloss black and white, but bespoke colours are also available.

Production is due to begin in February, but UK prices are still to be confirmed.

Also spotted in the Meridian room were the new G55 and G57 power amplifiers. The company has decided to re-introduce two- and five-channel amps to its range of electronics to enable surround controllers such as the new G65 (also on show) to drive passive speakers from other brands.

The stereo G57 power amp costs 4000, the G55 five-channel amp 4000.

Meridian says the new G65 controller is designed to operate with the HD621 HDMI processor, which separates out high-definition audio and video to improve the quality of both.

Cinema: Meridian 271, 3 x DSP640 (behind screen), 4 x DSP320 (in-ceiling), 4 x DSP3100 (surrounds), 2 x AC12 (interface). 2 x Perlisten D12s subs, Lyngdorf MP40 processor. DT 145" 2.35 AT screen. Sony VW870 projector & S-T lens, Lumagen Radiance Pro.
Lounge: Roon, NUC, Kef LS50 Wireless + 2 x REL Gibraltar-2 subs

Does the 're-introduction' of the G55 and G57 mean these are the exact same design as before? Or does anyone know if the amps have been tweaked or changed in anyway?

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't 4k each more than they originally retailed at before?

David

I was thinking the same thing. Good news for those that have used ones. I am a little surprised there isn't even a slight change, but based on the M's web site, they went with, "why mess with perfection"...

Now, an edit to my original post. According to a Sound & Vision review, the G55 cost USD$5,385 in 2007. Plugging that into the good old BLS inflation calculator for 2013, that comes out to USD$6,053. That is 3,700 quid, so not THAT insane. Better than the new 170k quid Naim amp! Either way, on the prowl for a used one.

They will sell. Not a lot in the way of decent 5 channel amps out there today. Further, the 2 channel is a beast!

Still cannot believe that a decade hasn't yielded SOME sort of improvement!

Rick, can you confirm that its exactly the same as the one that sold for almost 1/2 that in 2007?

I've been told the models are unchanged.

Last prices I can find just before they were discontinued are 2,750 for G57 and 3,250 for G55.

Cheers,

Rick

I'm hopeful that M. will finally offer upgrades to both SL and non-SL DSP speakers to the latest spec. The goodwill that adding support for ID40 to 861v4 would be multiplied sevenfold at least!

Priced right it could mean a lot of revenue for M. and their dealers.

Anyway, congratulations for pushing the digital music bar ever higher and staying in business for > 25 years, even after the awful Great recession.

To me that's an awful lot of cash for a 100w x 5ch amp. As good as it is, there's a lot of competition in that area from other brands offering 7ch and more power. (I know that doesn't necessary make it better) Technically you would need both to take advantage of a 7.1 setup and have shelled out 9000!! Add the G65 into the mix and it's 13,500 before speakers.

I know M is not looking at entry level kit but it a giant leap of faith to anyone entering into M.

Just my 2p

Kind regards
David
