It also shows that the internal architecture of the 861v6 is quite different from the 861v4 - adding an 8 channel input obviously required major changes, changes they weren't willing to make for the G series.

Might it be as likely that, in conjunction with major card changes (move to XMOS), M simply chose that opportunity to create a v6 MMHR input card which was incompatible with the v4? It's a moot point whether my v4 has 6 or 8 channel input capability, but I'm not sure that we know either way.

VK,
If the G65 had appeared with an 8 channel input we'd be none the wiser and I'd agree with you. I just think that this is the most likely reason for the six channel MMHR input.

I don't think that's relevant to the point. Hmm, I think it is. Meridian is not a high volume, lowish margin, Japanese or Korean behemoth and has far fewer development resources. It's clear to me that Meridian took a feature ROI decision which resulted in re-use of the existing G6x main board architecture. Certainly they will have considered demand for an 8-channel discrete input and, in this case, decided that it really didn't merit the presumably considerable effort in re-architecting the processor from scratch. Yes, the omission might seem "glaring" compared with cheaper products, and naturally disappointing to some, but I think this is one example where common-sense held out. Would we have preferred list price to have been 500 or more higher? Er, no, the fact that I don't own any 7.1 discs isn't relevant to the point I was making. I am entitled to be personally disappointed by the lack of 7.1 input whether you, or anyone else, is or not. I'm sure there are good reasons behind it. That makes it no less disappointing and I shouldn't have to answer to the Spanish Inquisition about my disc ownership to say so.

I'm fortunate enough to have a v8 and occasionally rig up a 7.1 set up. When I do so, the most interesting things for me are listening to 2 channel music through the various DSPs, esp Trifield (uses sides and rears)(and DVDAs of course). I think Skyfall is 7.1 but the effect of a 7.1 setup is fantastic with 5.1 and lower movies.
Personally speaking 7.1 out is the thing, if I only had 6 channel in, I would be very mildly disappointed. I know that's not the point of the comments, I'm just adding an observation.

If the v6 to v8 jitter reduction of 40% is reproduced here, the G65 is going to sound better than a G68SL, as well as being cheaper.

Due to the out of date use case for it's video and multi-room capabilities, combined with price, the G68 was no longer commercially feasible, leaving only the G61, introduced in 2003. How could they do anything other than this, without a major redesign? It includes basically feasible connectivity updates to suit M's purposes (and hopefully most customers) and the latest software goodies.
M's prior play-book would suggest delaying the new software technology release to update older products, to spur sales of the v8 and this new processor. Soon we will have a thread crying at the injustice of the timing of trickle down and not being available. I love progress.
Seriously, the last year plus has yielded a lot of output and new technology, which hopefully will allow M to appeal to more people and generate plenty of money to do what they do best.

Seeing that MMHR is limited to 6 channels it is rather likely that no changes were done to the internal cards. Strange thing is that the technology is already developed (OE14 / ID26, OE34 / ID29). I can understand that M does not want to cannibalize on 861v6 sales, but after 4 years you do expect something like the 8 channel architecture to trickle down to the lower series.

This one: Redesigned master oscillator and clocking system reduces jitter Bearing in mind that the clocking is redesigned from v6 to v8 I read the above as implying a trickle down of this new clocking. My understanding is that the reduction of jitter in the v8 comes from the new output card, therefore the still-6-channel input in the G65 doesn't necessarily contradict the claim of further jitter reduction G61SL to G65. This is of course all deduction unless someone wants to try to measure the jitter...

Just need a G Series Oppo to go with it, and a G Series-styled HD621. +1 I too would like to see a more inspired case design for the HD621. And I'd love a Meridian branded Oppo (especially one with built-in HD621), but I don't think that will ever happen.

Here's an interesting thought. Whilst I can't imagine any of us expecting the new G65 to be on par sonically with an 861v8, at it's price, it's not THAT much more than a s/h 861v4. Sure, it can't incorporate an ID40 card, but it could take an audio stream from say an MC200 via Meridian Link.
So this could be an interesting alternative for those of us who don't have the dosh for an 861v8, but are considering an 861v4.
I'd love to hear the two side by side.
