Sanjay

I would be interested in your reappraisal when you return.

I have now got to the stage where I can enjoy the music. Ok, I confess, I still occasionally have an analysis session with my 'reference' tracks.

I received the G91 today along with a pair of DSP5500 and set it all up this evening. I have to say I have not noticed any harshness even straight out the box. The G91 is a little temperamental while playing DVD-A discs but my friends G98 is the same. I'm using it as a surround system with 5500,5000 and a 5000C. As discussed before I think my sub is no longer required as the 5500's seem to have plenty of low down drive. I'm quite impressed with the surround aspect. Having just took out the 568/598 and replaced it with the G91 I am more than happy. I only used 2 or 3 presets on the 568 so I don't think I will notice any difference. I also noticed the G91 was upsampling my CD's to 24/96 until I set it as a surround system. Now it's stopped doing it? The tuner is great and I have not even moved onto the video side yet as I'm still waiting for cables to show up.

Cheers Gareth

most people posting here seem to use the digital output of the 91. How about the analogue stereo? Any feedback would be most welcome.

A follow up post:

The G91 is now well broken in. I had noticed improvements as mentioned above.

Then I upgraded to v1.27 software. This seemed to get rid of any remaining excessive upper mid brightness, perhaps at the expense of a slight veil. Overall the sound is very good now and preferable to the v1.0 software.

I am still getting an error message on the software upgrade:

File G91_core_1_27.mfu is downloaded successfully, and then the following message on the PC appears:

"Note that not all flash memory in your unit is enabled. Please contact your dealer for further details."

Anyone else seen this? Have emailed my dealer and Meridian support.

Also, with G91 configured as Type 0 or Type 1, when I press the DSP button, I get "DSP Disabled" in the display. Is this normal? How can I be sure upsampling is working on CDs? Display shows CD 44k PCM when playing CDs.

Anyway, the good news is that breaking-in and V1.27 seems to make a significant improvement to G91 over brightness out of the box.

Sanjay

I dont know if this is your problem but it is not obvious that there there are four files to load.

861v8+ID41 Revelation One filter, HD621, Musical Fidelity M8 700 mono blocks, Focal Scala (x2), Focal Mini Utopia (x3), Velodyne DD18, Oppo BD105, Roon NUC, 218, Radiance 2021, JVC X9000

The following three files were identified by MConfig for upload to the G91, and all three were confirmed as successfully uploaded

G91_core_1_27.mfu (622kB)
G91_data5_1_02.mfu (65kB)
dspe001c.mfu (55kB)

what is the fourth file?

The other file is G91_data_1_27

Many Thanks Colin

I found the missing file manually and uploaded by double clicking on it (WinFUP direct, not Mconfig). I then uploaded the other three files again for good measure. Now G91_core_1_27.mfu (622kB) did not give me the "Note that not all flash memory in your unit is enabled" message. Not sure why MConfig did not automatically identify this missing file as necessary to upload. They were all in the same directory.

But - nothing seems to have changed. Still get the DSP Disabled message and playing CDs shows 44k PCM i.e. a lower case k not a K. Wouldn't I see 44K if it was upsampling?

Can anyone else confirm if a G91 set as Type 0 playing CDs shows 44k or 44K, and also advise if pressing the DSP button gives a "DSP Disabled" message

many thanks (what a great forum!)

Sanjay

G91 2 channel analog out final report
-------------------------------------

Confirmed with Meridian that everything is working correctly wrt upsampling. Gone now are any last traces of over brightness on CDs. I'm sure software v1.27 made as much difference again as the first 50 hours of break-in.

Also, I obtained a few DVDAs from Amazon. Although its a challenge navigating to find the 2MLP tracks without a display attached, as a 2 channel audio only player the G91 excels.

And on DVDA's with 2MLP/96 kHz it sounds simply astounding. Final movement of Beethovens 9th/Barenboim at volume 75 was quite an experience, even in 2 channels. In 5.1 or 7.1 it must be religious.

Via analog outputs and as Type 0 (Analog preamp) alone this player earns its very substantial price. And to think I have surround sound and video all to look forward to.

G91 highly recommended for 2 channel audio. I'm definitely keeping these units (G91 and G57) I've had at home on evaluation. Peachy with my B&W Nautilus 804s.

Now back to the music (and saving up for more channels...and the G68)

Sanjay
