Some findings that refute Still-one's hypothesis (back to the drawing board!) : while using the iPad in vertical mode for about 2 hours, I encountered the following:

1) the search became unusable just like it does in horizontal mode. The workaround I found is that if you switch to the Queue screen, the search dialog will work. The only way to get search working on all screens again is to close and launch the app again

2) The controls may disappear just like they do when holding the iPad horizontal. Rotating the iPad 90 degrees to vertical doesn't fix this. Restarting the app is the only thing that has worked for me so far.

Screen shots below.

Have you looked at the diagnostic and usage logs? They are situated in the settings/about screen and I am sure that Meridian would find the one most recent to the time of problem useful to them. You will need to look at the logs (and content) to see whether the log references Core Control.

When iOS runs low on memory resources, iOS7 send certain applications a memory low message. The app should then respond to this message and free up memory hogging resources, like deleting UI features such as buttons/images etc - anything that the app is holding in memory but doesn't actually need at that moment in time but can recreate on demand.

My theory is that Core Control us freeing up memory by deleting buttons etc. but not recreating them before they are needed again. It is known that core control is quite memory hungry and can be jettisoned from memory entirely by iOS which people may interpret as an app crash but is just iOS being heavy handed with its crude memory management.

Sound like this could be some half way house to being jettisoned. With the help of the logs, Meridian can then see if they need to test the app in simulated low memory conditions.

I'm not trying to defend Meridian, but if there was a rush to get the app out by a deadline, handling low memory conditions would probably be low on the list of priorities of getting things to work and in the euphoria of a new release and zero budget remaining, the culture these days is often, it ill do.

If your theory is correct, is the memory problem worse in general with iOS7? Does the OS itself use more? Do iOS7-optimised apps use more? Is the memory control more heavy handed in iOS7? (Just curious.)

I did look for a log to send to M but didn't find anything time stamped even close to when I've run into issues with Core Control. Even when Core Control crashes completely, I do not see a crash log listed for it. There are plenty of logs for MobileSafari, MobileMail and other apps. If anyone wants to have a look, the logs are under Settings > General > About > Diagnostics & Usage > Diagnostic & Usage Data.

I'm also someone who is mindful of the resources I'm using on the iPad so I tend to keep the number of apps I have running on the iPad to a minimum. I'll keep looking.

iOS7 is unlikely be be less memory hungry than previous versions wink but I cannot say how detrimental iOS7 is. There are a lot of changes under the hood with iOS7 that users simply will not notice of which the 64bit mode on iPhone 5S (and I assume forthcoming iPads) will hopefully alleviate the problem for good. *if* ios7 is optimised for 64 bit, then in my experience, data structures are often realigned to make 64 bit access optimal. This realignment typically adds padding (ie unused space) to data structures which will have a bigger overhead on RAM.

Unfortunately, iOS devices are not well endowed with RAM (particularly compared with the latest offerings from Samsung and Google).

Not wishing to invite a drone attack of stats but I bet the RAM will be a special 'new' feature of the iPad 7 or 8.

Any updates on IOS7 experiences? There is a rumor circulating around the house that I might be getting a new iPad Mini for Xmas. Not sure I want one at this point. My iPad 2 with IOS5 is used exclusively for my music and works just fine.

I picked up the new iPad Air yesterday and have found that every move and loading of screens with the Meridian Control now is virtually instantaneous as compared to my iPad 3. Swiping from screen to screen loads about as fast as I move my fingers.

That's interesting. There's still a bit of lag on my iPad 2 and mini. Naim app is smooth as silk though

On my old iPad 'original' (or '1'), when I switch to another app and come back it reloads, and thus loses the position. Annoying at times. Does that still occur with the iPad Air?
