I put in a wish for USB for M-config. Having re-read my 818 manual for other reasons today, I noticed it mentions you can apparently use the USB input for this purpose, so it appears to be a redundant 'wish'...
[Edit: it also mentions that newer variants of the 861/G-series processors also have this feature...]
I agree, I would look at the MSB Universal Transport. I think it has Meridian written all over it. Remove MSB's proprietary connection and add Meridian's, and your off to the races. MSB used the Oppo video, while sizeable reworking the audio portion.
I also see an opportunity to reuse the 808 chassis's. Why can't these accept ID40-ID41 cards. These disk spinners have been crushed in the aftermarket.
Primary: MD600, MS200 (SpeakerLink to AES), Trinnov ST-2, Ayre V6-xe, Salk SS8 3x LRC. Secondary: MC600 (whole house). Zone one: 568.2, G57, MS200, Spatial Hologram M2SE. Zone 2-6 (Awaiting assignment).
IMO, instead of involving another 3rd party supplier, it would be better if Meridian simply partnered with Oppo and 'breathed on' one of their machines. Not entirely sure what this would add, though as the 95/105 are already very good as I understand it? Even my 93 as a digital transport into the 818 does not embarrass itself at all...
If Meridian did the equivalent to an Ayre DX-5* in a G-series chassis - with (crucially) their own low jitter digital output to MMHR, and built in upsamplng/apodising - I'd buy it in half a very short heartbeat.
However, I think this will never happen, sadly.
* Oppo with everything rebuilt, a major job, but also shockingly expensive.
I think a manufacturer opens itself up to criticism, if they simply rebadge and apply their pricing structure. I believe that the player must have MMHR, as Ludwig suggests. I think the player would cost about $5k, about the cost of the MSB's player. I think these would do well, answering critics about codec decoding among other things. I think this player would breath life back on, given it would be a digitally connected, lossless system with room correction.

It would not be difficult for M to design their own audio output board for an Oppo but if you ignore the need for MSR compatibility, where exactly does that take them? We're there already without M's input. A decent LPSU would be a nice step, maybe a clock mod but the full fat Vanity board doesn't use the standard audio clock either.
It's better that M concentrates on what they're better at than other companies, rather than what they're merely good at.
Mark G68, baby Genelecs, Humax Foxsat, Oppo+Vanity93, Toshiba HD-A35, Pioneer CLD-925 + Meridian 519, various other random bits and bobs Got a black G08.2 you want to sell?

What would that be? I disagree and believe that Meridian could improve upon the unit with its tech, and wisely ignores the part they cannot. I would be interested in what Meridian is better at than digital audio?
The fact is that Meridian is going three directions. Mass consumer, Sooloos distributed audio or halo 800 level products. This would be in the halo product, a segment they are missing. If they won't add processing to their processors, they need this product.
Kal, Have you tried any of the MSB transports? While the Vanity is nice, it's unlikely that Meridian would do something that doesn't have their proprietary connections.
