I presume the USB input won't take a direct digital output from an iPod/iPhone/iPad. If it had that feature, I'd place my order today.
I thought there had been talk of some software upgrade to the Explorer that would add the apodizing filter. Is that no longer happening.

You could use the coaxial or TOSLINK digital output from something like the Pure I-20 iPhone/iPod dock into the Director.

This is very exciting...
...a combined Meridian 518/566 for the modern era.
It will certainly breathe new life into my Meridian 506.2

...a combined Meridian 518/566 for the modern era. I think this is a very welcome product, but IMO there's very little of the 518 about it. The 518 - for me - was about optimizing individual sources with user-selectable gain and dither shaping, features which are sadly missing on every current Meridian product.

You could use the coaxial or TOSLINK digital output from something like the Pure I-20 iPhone/iPod dock into the Director. You could, but then you'd have two pieces of gear on your desktop rather than one. It's a real shame they didn't include analog volume control. Then all you'd need is a set of active loudspeakers and you'd have yourself a nice - and affordable - desktop hi fi system.

Oh well, looks like an Explorer is still the best option for what I want one for. It would have been nice to have the volume control function AND apodising in one unit. +1.

Aahhhh, the joys of enthusiast internet forums. Why is it whenever something new comes out, we always wish it was different in some way

Just everybody please remember to play nice when the noobs with their Directors come and occupy your forum and start asking noob questions (tongue firmly in cheek).
We were all newbies once - and I think I still am!

I think Meridian's decision to market to the masses is great, a masterstroke. Kinda like a loss leader in a supermarket, Sardines at 1/2 price but we have some really good smoked salmon too
Roon/Tidal, SBT, Trinnov ST2 , Twin Devialet D premiers, Vivid Audio Giya G1 Spirits, dedicated and treated room. Meridian gear: 568.2mm and DSP5000's acting as TV speakers.

Aahhhh, the joys of enthusiast internet forums. Why is it whenever something new comes out, we always wish it was different in some way One size doesn't fit all etc. Seriously though, this is the kind of product that makes total sense if you have a good conventional analogue setup that you want to add a DAC to.
Mark G68, baby Genelecs, Humax Foxsat, Oppo+Vanity93, Toshiba HD-A35, Pioneer CLD-925 + Meridian 519, various other random bits and bobs Got a black G08.2 you want to sell?

Kinda like a loss leader in a supermarket Ish, but they do need to make money on the sales. I think it's more akin to an entry level product; get the brand name out in the mass market and then look to hook the those users that can afford them towards the higher end systems. Regards, Carl
