What do you feel you would experience using a Trifield preset in a 2.0 system?

It wouldn't be a 2.0 system - as I mentioned in the original suggestion, the card would have to add a centre channel output to implement Trifield.
This was based on my assumption that Trifield only used the L+R+C channels, if it uses more surround channels than this, I guess it wouldn't work...

It would be nice if the detailed configuration of DSP speakers could also be included in the Meridian Configuration program. Don't know if this is at all possible (it is for some aspects already, EBA for example). Maybe this can at least be facilitated with Speakerlink speakers connected to a processor.

Easy guys, it was only a suggestion - I thought that's what this thread was for! If Meridian don't like it, or think it's of any value, they simply have to ignore it... In any case, even if the Trifield idea is a bad one, for various reasons, I've been wanting a good DRC solution for 2-channel waaaay before I started down the Meridian route. I definitely think that has value and don't see why it's inherently connected with multichannel capabilities/movies, etc.? People are already using various third party solutions for 2-ch RC (see Rodney's thread, for example) and Meridian might make some money out of offering their own package, whether that's internal to something like the 818, OR a little external processor which sits between that, or legacy 2-ch gear, older processors, etc. and adds MRC in some form while understanding things like MHR/Apodizing, and not messing up all the hard work that's gone into the signal through their equipment beforehand. Think of it possibly like a sort of HD621 but for MRC? In fact, I think I like that better than my original suggestion it could also really appeal to 3rd party DAC owners who wish to take advantage of 'good' DRC in the form of MRC. James

James, relax Just wanted to make sure I understood. Some folks do use Trifield with just 2 speakers. They like it so that's fine. However, when we spoke to M directly about this (HH1 IIRC) they thought it was a bit weird as it isn't designed for that. The internal architecture of the 808/818 is probably way off what would be needed for >2 channels. Ian is actually right... buy an 861 That would logically be M response. 2 channel is this product; multi-channel is this other product. It would make no sense to hybridise them. MRC for 2 channels though I do agree with. I guess they would need to know how much demand there would be for it. Here's two then for starters.

Haha, it's OK I'm chilled this isn't one of those topics to get me wound up! Understood about Trifield within something like an 818, possibly not a good idea then - I had no idea you could run it in true 2-ch, although I can't say I get that conceptually. I'm kind of liking the idea of a separate box to do 2-ch MRC, though, which perhaps sits after the DAC? I think the new products like the Director and Explorer are really smart in terms of making money out of some of Meridian's tech to markets which don't buy into the whole system, much like their standalone CD players, DACs, amps and processors did for years, and something like this could serve established M system users and 3rd party... Cheers, James

Trifield works in 5-channel as well...
Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.
Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

Didn't know that! Since I'm considering the beginnings of a multichannel system that makes it all the more worthwhile. Has anyone compared direct vs Trifield on an 861v6/8 and care to comment - sorry O/T maybe a different thread?

An upgrade path for legacy 8000s (even if expensive) as there was for the 6000s - especially if they bring out a 8000.4.

This was based on my assumption that Trifield only used the L+R+C channels, if it uses more surround channels than this, I guess it wouldn't work... Trifield, uses the surround channels to add ambiance. EDIT: As Ludwig has just posted there are a lots of past discussion on Direct vs Trifield have a read of those first before starting a new thread. Regards, Carl
