Seeing as we all start out with Albums capable of playing for 60 minutes........and more "recently", Albums with 70 minutes of Playing Time......some may be interested in the comparison chart below compiled from the Stats in this Thread

The 5 people on the RIght are those with MP3 Transcode = On

Obviously, there are still fairly big differences between the Average Space used per Album............and obviously, the number of High Res and Lossy Albums can influence the overall averages.........but I suspect that the vast majority of most people's libraries consists of FLAC Versions of the 60 & 70 minute CD's

Some may then be interested to see how the above impacts on the Number of Albums a User could Store on a 1Tb Drive (easy to see how this extrapolates out to 2Tb and 3Tb Drives)

Big differences.............perhaps big enough for some to consider why there are such discrepencies???

Might some people be ripping with 3rd party software with different FLAC compression settings, and then importing?

Thanks Ronnie....that's a good way to view.

just to confirm....From Ludwig to the right (5 users) are all with MP3 = ON.

A few thoughts/observations:-

Ludwig may have a lot of classical which I guess may compress well as both FLAC and MP3. Could explain why his Album per TB is highest of the MP3=ON group.

2500-3000 albums per TB is a pretty good guide range for MP3 = OFF.

FWIW I have quite a few CD Singles in there which will bring my average album size down and push my album per TB up.

Can Ratbert, Tintin and ChrisLayer double check that MP3 transcode is switched off (you don't have to have set an export location for this to have created the MP3's). These figures look like the MP3=ON group.

Would be good to be 100% sure.

That's the kind of discussion I wanted to kick off, but I think the numbers will start some people thinking and the reasons why may then become more obvious perhaps.

Hi Nick!

I can confirm that the last 5 on the Right have indicated above that they have MP3 Transcode = On.

Hi Joel,

I just looked a bunch of album files that have been EAC Sooloos ripped and dBpa ripped. I know that I use FLAC setting @ 5 for dBpa, but, cannot see what setting EAC uses; anyone know this?

The compression % factor varies regardless of which ripper was used. On the albums I reviewed it is anywhere from 23% to 45% compressed.

I suspect it is as much to do with data content/complexity which determines compression and thus size.

Nick,

I agree that "Complexity" has a lot to do with it, but I also believe that Playing Minutes per CD has the biggest impact e.g. during the 60's, 70' and 80's, many Rock bands considered 40-45 Good Minutes of Content to represent a "Good" Output (20 minutes a Side was what most Artists aimed at in those LP days).

This Playing time can then contrast with many more modern "Compilation" CD's, where up to 70+ minutes can be seen on occasion.

However, I still think that given the Eclectic nature of most people's listening habits combined with Averaging the content across Thousands of Albums in most people's cases, that the Average per Album should be closer than is shown above.

FWIW, I find that about 320Mb is a good average for the vast majority of CD Albums and about 950Mb to 1050Mb for High Res 24/96 Albums.
