Given that the next step up from a Director is currently a 818, that's a pretty steep upgrade curve!

Wouldn't the AC200 be the next up? After that they'd probably expect you'd move to Sooloos, so an MC200, then add endpoints, etc.

I think this is a great product from Meridian, hope it sounds good and does very well for them.

AC200 only has digital out, no analogue out.

Yes it's a pretty big leap from the Director to the AC200.

Meridian could fill he gap with a product that combines the best features of the Explorer and Director (DAC w/apodizing filter; multiple digital inputs, headphone amplifier; volume control and variable RCA outputs). Something a bit like the Naim DAC V-1, which when paired with some acive loudspakers could result in a top notch desktop audio system. But I suppose that could make the AC200 look overpriced in comparison.

I should mention that certain products like Sonos attenuate the digital output so you do get volume control.

We have set this up as a test with a Sonos Connect via the Director and volume control works but you'd need to check with what you are intending to connect. Thanks, Justin.

Won't you lose resolution using Sonos volume control with the Director?

Yes you would lose resolution when not at full output. The Director will still improve this signal using upsampling, apodising etc but the best way would be to supply Director with a fixed full resolution digital signal and use the preamp

I just bought an Explorer last month. AHHHHHH......

This thing looks more like what I REALLY wanted. Darn those new product announcements. Any trade up programs?

I'm trying to think of the scenario where one would use the digital output on this device. Can you help me understand what you are thinking about?

For me, I have a set of powered speakers on my computer and getting improved sound running from my computer to the powered speakers is what I'm looking for and this would be perfect. I have the Explorer which is nice, but with apodising filter and up sampling, analog out using RCA jacks is preferred over the 1/8 inch stereo jack. At least this is my current setup.

What would you use a digital output for? Just curious as to your thoughts.

Scratch that. I just re-read the brochure (it's late for me, I'm a little tired)

It's has optical and coax SPDIF out on this thing as well as RCA analog out.

Any US dealers wanting to take in an SLIGHTLY used Explorer that's practically brand new (about 30 days old) with all original packaging in trade for the Director? Just curious.

Thanks!

Update. I'm getting the Director so I got the dealer to swap out. YEAH! I'm happy now.

For those that want a better picture of the back of the device, go to Audio Advisor's website. http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MEDIR

They have great photos, but it has obviously USB, but it has two L&R RCA outputs and then a 1/8 inch jack for SPDIF and Opitcal.

What digital outputs?

The combined Toslink and SPDIF socket is an input.
