Well, this does look like a rather good introduction for the masses, and I expect it will be modestly priced too (for a Meridian): Meridian Director Cheers George

Dear all, I thought I'd get in early to let you know about the launch of the Meridian Director. Bring your music system back to life with Meridian's new Director DAC (Digital to Analogue Converter). Director places over 30 years of Meridian music innovation between your music source and your hi-fi. Hand-built in Britain, this compact and elegant DAC is designed to bring superior performance to any audio product. Upgrade your existing sources Digital media, whether from a computer or a digital source like a CD player or music streamer, are the most common audio sources today. But many home audio systems are analogue. The Director provides the link between the two - handling both USB and SPDIF digital sources. So, if you have a beloved CD player or music server with digital outputs, Director is the perfect way to connect them with your analogue hi-fi to enjoy superior sound and bring older components back to life. Director includes Meridian's advanced Upsampling and Apodising technologies, which can make original recordings sound even better than when they were made. Wherever your digital music comes from, Director makes it sounds its best. Here at Meridian Oxford were so impressed with the Director we already have 100 in stock, the cost is 449.00. You can call us on 01865 782300 to order or reserve yours, or buy straight from the Meridian Oxford Amazon store. If you would like to be one of the first to experience the new Director, come and hear it in our showroom! Call us now on 01865 782300 to book an appointment. We have a system set up ready to demonstrate. Many thanks, Justin.

Oh that is seriously tempting. Does it do volume control though?

Director is designed to connect to any analogue hi-fi or audio system with its own volume control If I'm reading this correctly it appears volume control relies on the attached system.

Hi - the output is fixed so your amp would need to provide the volume control

Oh well, looks like an Explorer is still the best option for what I want one for. It would have been nice to have the volume control function AND apodising in one unit.

Looking at the Director specifications on the Meridian site, I think that they have cut and pasted too much from the Explorer spec. I don't believe that the Director spec should contain:
"Analogue volume control for headphone output, controlled from PC, control law modified to match connected OS.SPDIF output downsamples 4x (192/176.4kHz) to 2x (96/88.2kHz)."
Unless I am missing something...
Update: That was quick - Meridian site now corrected.

VirusKiller,
Thanks for posting the link to my review. At $699, the Director is a giant killer.
