No I didn't. Do I need to? They are all set to auto. It's unlikely the processor and speakers will see the MSR+ at the same time as the processor is out of sight in a cupboard.
So... I got my IP2SL yesterday, hooked it up with null modem to the 518 in my upstairs system. Doesn't seem to want to communicate. I tried connecting to the DSP7000s in that system. It worked, but the DSP7000s don't respond to all RS232 commends correctly (known bug Meridian isn't going to fix).
I then brought it downstairs and tried connecting to my 568.2. No joy at all. I tried the 596. A few commends work, but not all (it's not the controller in the system.) Didn't have a long enough cable to connect it to the master DSP8000. The other one did nothing. The software is finding the IP2SL, but, according to the log window (turned on) the unit isn't getting what it wants from the Meridian components. All comm parameters are correct.
Why wouldn't it connect to the 568.2? I know the 518 is ancient, but the 568.2, though old, should respond to the RS232 commands. The port is good, as I"ve updated the unit with it more than once.
Is the vMSR not designed to talk to 500 series equipment? Really hoping to make this work.
Thanks,
John

Yes, I tried it both ways, with Managed Comms on and off.
Hi John,
Could you try:
1) Completely shutting down the vMSR app. Double push the iPad square button to bring up the currently running apps, press and hold one to bring up '-' next to them, and then press - next to vMSR to completely close it.
2) Confirming the 568.2MM is the system controller. System in standby and press the 'clear' button on your MSR, so 568 shows 'controller'
3) Using a static IP in the vMSR.
4) Power the 568.2 off with its rear mains switch, and then back on again.
Then try again?
Could you also let me know how the IP2SL gets its network connection please? Straight from a router, or via a switch?
Anything you would consider unusual about the network perhaps?
I'm connecting the IP2SL in my system to the processor which is in a cupboard. It is not the controller. My centre speaker is the IR controller; I need to be able to continue using the traditional MSR+ because the iPad is not always available.
All works beautifully.
The quick start guide states that the IP2SL must be connected to the controller, but this is not the case with my system. Why do the instructions state it must be connected to the Controller? Will there be any problems with me connecting it this way?
No I didn't. Do I need to? They are all set to auto. It's unlikely the processor and speakers will see the MSR+ at the same time as the processor is out of sight in a cupboard.
John, setting the devices to "Auto" means they will typically default to controller pending a system auto controller setup, which is initiated by pressing clear on the MSR+ as I described above. See G92 User Guide page 21.
With a correctly connected system (Comms leads), when the clear button is pressed, the processor will briefly display "auto" followed by "Controller" and other M devices and the Master DSP will display "Not Controller" / "N.Cont".
Having more than one controller in a Meridian system can lead to unpredictable system behaviour such as MSR keys being reacted to twice resulting in say volume control being erratic and or slow to react.
I believe that currently your Master DSP and the Processor are both acting as controllers. Which is why: the Master DSP is reacting to the MSR and the processor is reacting to the RS232 port.
As I said, "this may be good for you", but it is not recommended. However, it's your system and provide you understand the caveats you may wish to leave it this way. Personal I would not and if I want both MSR and RS232 I would install a 3rd party IR extender.
I set them all to auto and pointed the MSR+ at the centre speaker which did indeed display 'Con'.
My question to Rick was is it OK for the vMSR to be linked to the processor which is not the controller? I don't think I have more than one controller in the system. Despite the instructions for the vMSR it seems to work connected to a product that is not the controller.
I also think it is highly likely that your processor is acting as a controller in addition to your master DSP. Is there any way to have both the processor and master DSP visible to you when you have the system in standby and press 'clear' on the MSR+ ? That's the only way you can be sure that there is only one controller at work.
I just bought a global cache product and I have one question as to how to use the IR sensors. Mine didnt come with any IR emitter to plug in the product, can I just buy any kind of IR emitter that uses a jack connector or is there any more specific requirement ? I see some for $3 on eBay so would like to know if they would work. Thank you.
