Is the Explorer performing the same function as the Arcam rPAC for 145?
Why are all these manufacturers bringing out USB DACs all of a sudden?

Tapping in to the (computer) head phone market I guess.
They don't excite me that much, but then I don't use heads phones, for those that do I can see the attraction of improved AQ.

rDac does not support 192kHz music. Also it only has analogue outputs. Can't comment on the sound.
Because everyone else is. And selling loads as well.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.
Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

Broadly similar but the Arcam only goes to 96k. The Explorer also has headphone, line and optical outputs. Arcam only line and headphone.
Why? Because there is a market for them. Albeit HMV went bust did you see how much shop floor was taken up with headphones ?

Once Meridian releases the Explorer firmware configuration software, you will be able, among other things, to swap support of the digital optical output for implementation of Meridian's apodizing filter.

Thanks a lot for all your advice on the Explorer. As my Mac is administrator locked I can't install Bit Perfect or the like (I will have to see what I can do at work next week).
I picked up a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 880 Pro headphones today with a super affordable amp and it sounds amazing! Duncans info page was super helpful as it advised to put the output in the opposite one to what I was using out of the Explorer. I was always using the headphone output so that conflicted with the amp. The difference there was amazing!
I just wish there was more places online to hear high res tracks. A high resolution alternative subscription service would be great!
Does anyone know of places other than HDTracks online to buy/stream high res tracks?

I might be getting old but I basically never use headphones.
Our modern technology is making us more and more solitary in our pursuits. I like to enjoy music and films in company with others. That's why I like Trifield so much as the "sweetspot" is so much wider.
I suppose you could use the Explorer to connect to the USB audio output of your Meridian gear. Oh...

Hi Res tracks-Linn Records, B&W (Society of sound), 2L, eClassical.com. Sure there are more.
Do they sound much better to you (rather than being from a good master)?
I think on eClassical when you buy a CD you can download all formats-and compare.

I use headphones either for late night listening or on mobile devices. For the latter, I rarely travel with a laptop these days, preferring a lighter tablet. Not sure I can find a need for the this nice little device at present.
Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

Malcolm, get a Y connector for your phones! Or a set of blue tooth party headphones, then everyone's in the sweetspot. Bit of a dampener on conversation though (get one with a mic)...
