3 lights is likely caused by you setting the output in your midi settings to 192.

The best SQ with Explorer comes from applying a bit-perfect approach so that the explorer gets the exact resolution of the files being played.

I expect you are getting 44.1 --> 192 conversion which is not ideal.

When you get to bit perfect output the difference compared to simply plugging it in is quite significant.

Exactly. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SOFTWARE PLAYER for any PC/Mac audio application.

You are correct!
I just went into the settings and it was set to 192. Is there a way to set this setting on an automatic setting so that it defaults to the file type selected?

If not do you have any recommendations?

I can NOT unfortunately install any third party sound software onto my Mac as its a work computer and it is blocked for that kind of thing.

Yes....you have to install stuff to make the music app behave in bit perfect manner. This is then automatic.

Below is a screen shot of my Foobar2000 player (free s/ware in Windows that has plug ins called WASAPI and ASIO....either do the job nicely)

[Linked Image]

Selecting the WASAPI Explorer as the device for output provides a perfect input for the Explorer.

Am sure others can provide examples of the equivilant for a MAC.

Anyone using Halide Bridge, Dragonfly or any other Async USB converter has the same job to do here.

Hi Hector / NoWayMan
Were there any Instructions in the Explorer Box about how to set up a PC or Mac for Bit Perfect Audio Replay??

These Instructions would apply to ALL USB Audio Devices, not just the Meridian Explorer..........and without using these, the Windows and OSX Operating Systems will mangle and ReSample the Audio Stream in quite undesirable ways

Summary: If you're not achieving Bit Perfect Replay (as is evidenced by the Three Lights always being lit on the Explorer) then you are only hearing a fraction of the Audio Performance possible from a USB ASync Device

Hi Ronnie,
I completely agree... However I maybe being really thick here but take a look at the instructions in the image and then take a look at a screen shot of the option page I get in the Audio MIDI Setup panel as prompted in the instructions....

As you can see I cant see the "sounds" tab or anywhere to suggest/set a default audio setting. Bit frustrated

Any thoughts anyone?

Is there a way to do it with software included on a mac? I have a work mac that is locked. I do however have many Adobe CS programs installed.... Not sure if any of these can do the job.

I don't believe you can automatically switch the bit rate on the Mac without 3rd party software. It's not as convenient, but you can select the most common native bit rate (presumably 44.1 kHz) in Audio MIDI to leave as the default. It does mean switching to the higher rate manually to play a Hi-Res file, and then remembering to switch it back. Inconvenient, but it works.

Cheers, Ian
