Hello all,

My 588 works fine, but only if it has been powered off (using the back panel switch) or disconnected from the mains for a few hours.

When I turn it on, it works and sounds fine for one hour or so but then it stops recognizing any CDs.

I took it to the official Meridian Service and they say that the PSU needs to be replaced for a total cost of 600 euros. They say it can't be repaired due to Meridian policies.

I am being a little suspicious or does 600 euros seem bit too much for a switching PSU?

Does anybody have any experience/information about the voltage and current requirements of the 588?

If it cannot be repaired, I could build a good shunt regulated PSU or even fit a top-notch switching unit.

I just found that my 588 uses an off the shelf el-cheapo PSU that can be bought at Farnell or Mouser for about 30 euros.
Emerson Network Power LPT22 PSU

BTW, there are many other pin-compatible alternatives of the same PCB size and with better specs.

Even though this is several years on, thank you for this snippet it lead me in the right direction - it is not hard to replace.

If anyone is reading this recently the LPT22 is discontinued, the LPT42 appears to be a suitable drop-in replacement.

If you do replace the PSU please ensure the connections on the replacement are in the same order;
obviously if its the same as the original you should have no problem, but 'upgrades' sometimes have differing pin-outs

Quite right - but I've spend a lot of time going over the specs and pin-outs of the replacement unit against the original so I'm happy that it is a drop-in replacement.

These seem to be industry-standard units.
