When I was at university, I was wandering up London's Edgeware Road (then full of audio shops) and spotted a shop with a Michell Focus One turntable and Focus arm they clearly had no idea what to do with. So I made them an offer. One thing led to another and soon I had a 101B and an 103D driving some B&O speakers. The first Christmas after getting a job, I got a pair of M2s in Wigmore St. to go with the 101B. They sounded wonderful, though I had to be careful with the volume.

The 101B/M2 are still going strong. Meridian replaced a transistor in the 101B about 8 years ago. That's not bad going for 29 years service. The Focus has also just come back from being refurbished by J.A. Michell, who are still in Borehamwood and also still going strong.

I've been interested in Meridian's DSP approach to audio signal processing since talking to one of the designers at a show at the Heathrow Penta, where they had an experimental DSP-based crossover in an active loudspeaker. At the time I was looking at DSPs in computers, this was around the time Steve Jobs put a Motorola 56001 into his NeXT Machine for digital audio, so it would have been the late 1980s.

I still haven't moved to an end-to-end digital system. I'm not comfortable with all the proprietary interfaces and formats that keep changing, requiring hardware and software upgrades. Equipment longevity is also an interesting question ...
