Folks,

I've had an issue for some time where my G98 would not boot up, it would freeze at the Boothroyd Stuart display. After powering down and allowing caps to discharge I could usually power up again and get it to function. No such luck any longer. Terminally locked at power up.

I've popped the lid and tried replacing the drive - no success. I can hear a buzzing sound coming from the power supply itself. I've check all connections all all seem sound, no signs of arcing or corrosion.

I've checked the power supply output and found the following:

K12 Red Wire 5v Reads 5.08v
K9 Black Wire Ground
K11 Blue Wire -12v Reads -12.56v
K1 Yellow Wire Reads 13.1v
K7 Red Wire Reads 5.07v
K10 Black Wire Reads 0v

Any suggestions out there?

John

I should really leave this to someone else (boozy afternoon) but is the 5V adjustable? If so, turn it up to 5.1/5.2.

Disassembled down to the unit itself. No adjustments possible. Model is EOS VTL40-3200. Pin out descriptions all look to match.

I also see XP PLC model number ERS40UT30

I had the exact same problem with my G91. Meridian initially replaced the PSU but then when the problem recurred found a problem with the cable between the PSU and the power distribution board. I seem to remember that originally had two push on connectors but looking at it now, the non-PSU end is soldered in place.

The 5v current draw will be quite high so it's important there are low resistance connections. I think your search should centre around those wires from the PSU to the power distribution board.

Excellent suggestion. When I check voltage, I did so on the pads on that board. That suggests good to that points. Will try heating up those joints and applying a touch more solder. Will share results.

Next thing to check would be the flat cables which run from the power distribution board elsewhere. Some especially are solid core and can develop hairline cracks which cause intermittent connections which may also be temperature related.

Flat cables all look good. I inspected the power supply and noticed discoloration under the transformer on the PCB. I ordered a new unit since they are relatively inexpensive to see if that is my issue.

Again, will report upon installing new power supply.

Looking at my power supply, there's a preset next to the output connector which I expect adjusts the high current +5v line. Mine, at the other end, measures 5.17v.

SUCCESS! My G98 now works great with a new power supply. Speculation (unconfirmed) is that the 13v was in excess, but the net result was that for less than $50 I have my unit functional.

I have photos of the failed unit available to post but could use assistance. Perhaps to the wiki?

I replaced with the one originally fitted, the EOS detailed above.

Have a look in the FAQ How do I add an image to my message? and also the 'How To Guide' in the Gallery forum. Any problems drop me a PM.
