Absolutely, RAID1 improves availability however, for security backups are essential.

Does anyone have any input on drive recommendations for the MS600? My dealer recommended Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB drives. He said 2TB is the maximum drive size recommended.

If you wish to maximize the amount of disk storage space available and are willing to do manual backups to an external drive, then the MD600 can be reconfigured to 4 Terabytes of non-RAIDED storage. A waiver form has to be signed acknowledging that all data is lost on both drives in a non-RAIDED configuration in the event of one of the two drives failing. Once the form is signed and the drives installed, then Meridian will remote into the unit and make the appropriate changes online. The MD600 supports 2 Terabyte drives only and those are not provided with the unit but we do provide a list of recommended drives.

The MD600 can be setup as system core with the MC200 setup as the audio endpoint. There is a definite sonic advantage on all of the outputs when replacing the MC200 with an MS600 as an audio endpoint

Am not sure that this info is particularly up-to-date. I have been using 2 x 3TB drives and I am pretty sure that 2x4TB are also used by some MD600 users.

Hopefully a Premuim dealer will be able to confirm latest advice.

Meridian as yet don't recommend that 3TB (or larger) are used in the MD600, as they aren't as 'robust' as 2TB drives, and don't pass all the tests Meridian put them through.

However these larger drives are improving all the time, and Meridian only have a certain amount of resources to put towards analysing drives. So it's quite likely that there are 3TB drives being made, which would come up to the Meridian standard, if they had time to evaluate them.

In my experience we have several MD600 owners running 3TB drives, and they seem fine.
Nothing special needs to be configured, just put in a pair of identical 3TB drives and allow them to format.

My advice would still be use 2TB if you don't need the extra space, but if you need 3TB, and stick to 'reputable' manufacturers (I use Seagate) you should be OK.

Always make an additional backup though!

I feel like a bit of an amateur when I hear people needing 3TB drives. I am not a big classical guy, so perhaps that is what takes up the space, but in 35 plus years of buying music, I'd fill about 1.5 TB max. Lightweight smile

Simon, I am also am a "lightweight" user with my 2TB drives and I do not expect to go to 3TB.

I use Seagate Constellation enterprise drives in my MD600.

These drives have what Seagate call a PowerChoice option to choose a particular setting for the extent of power saving required by using a Set Features Command" for SATA drives.

I was never able to work out how to use this feature. However, the advice back from Meridian was to use the default setting on the drives that gives one of the options for power saving.

Has anyone else faced this PowerChoice option and maybe even been able to get better power saving by using the PowerChoice option?

Currently I am a real lightweight, I only have my MC 200 and its not full. I am being selective as to what I import so I have room to grow if anything unmissable comes along and will look to expanding storage in the future.
The thing with very large collections, as I see it, is you have to be able to live long enough to play it all. Lol
I do get the idea of a complete library though, so ones choice is never restricted.
It's nice to know that it's there if you want it. I just can't see me filling 3TB anytime soon.

Just thoughts, keep collecting, Chris smile

GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

I'm ashamed to say I still have 200GB free of my 500GB and still find music I've not listened to for ages and some music which will be deleted when I get round to it. I don't get too far when browsing before finding something I really want to listen to. What does this say about me? I've got more music on HDs outside the system but I'm probably going to be fine with my little box.

It did seem for a while that Hi-Res files would eat up the storage but they don't look so attractive now. If I were Meridian I might turn on the 24/192 capability (is it there?) and sell a few more storage devices...

24/192 capability is there. M downscale it to 24/96 though, as the DSPs won't like it at full resolution.

Sooloos, Roon, G series (with LPS upgrade), 800 series (with LPS upgrade), HD621, AC200, Prime and PS, DSPs old and new.

Purdeys, Moke, Leica, 'Blad. Only the best.

Although the DAC in the 808.3 (and presumably 808v5) do go up to 192k, therefore for analogue output there would be the potential to keep things at 192k until the last D to A conversion were it not for Sooloos down converting to 96k at source.
