So they basically f*** the 16/44 version up to 'prove' how superior the 24/96 one is.
Not Fit for purpose springs to mind.
Have you tried down mixing the 24/96 to 16/48? Bearing in mind that quite a lot of 16/44 releases look as dreadful as that one, without this comparison in mind, it could just be incompetence across the board, rather than a cynical attempt to make 24/96 superior.
