I have been in touch with one of the leading designers of hi-fi power supplies, I don't want to name names until I get confirmation. However, he is very interested to design an upgrade/replacement Linear PSU, for a group buy.

This would have several benefits over off the shelf linear PSU's:

- Custom designed to fit easily (no holes to drill).
- Would offer superb, low noise, audio specific regulation for all 3 voltages.
- Designed with the high case temp of the Meridian units in mind.
- There may be an offboard/external option also possible.

So could I get an indication if anyone might be interested in this and if so, what price bracket would be suitable (so that we don't go totally overkill or too basic performance).

I hope this OK to post, Moderators, please let me know if it's not!

Edit:
This should be able to power G68, G61 and all 861 variants, other would need to be confirmed if there is interest.

I would consider one. But as you say these types of things can get out of hand with respect to design specs.. Personally would love having a spare PSU for when my 861 eventually goes.

I am a hesitant to fit different PSU's into equipment I paid a lot of money for, I like to think Meridian did a lot of research into which psu to fit in the design stage? the new linear psu may very well be an improvement but equally may not! Why not have the Meridian health check and get a new psu fitted and 5 year guarantee, just a thought?

I'd rather have the Meridian health check AND linear PSU in my 861v6. My unit is still under warranty and I would like it to keep it that way. I do hope they are sticking to the Linear PSU rollout througout the electronics range which they kicked off with Anniversary 808.3 and then 818.

They should never have stopped with the linear PSU's in the first place. Audio Quality first!

Yes I agree, if the health check was to fit a linear psu and 5 year guarantee then that would be the ideal. I hope you are correct with your predictions?

Ummm, maybe because 500 isn't cheap to cover against a known common problem? Even car makers acknowledge when a part is prone to fail and cover it well outside the standard warranty.
Considering the initial cost of say an 861, I'm saddened by the way 'M' have changed their repair policies over the years, it used to be very supportive and helpful. Even though I've stayed a customer for over 30yrs, it's now in spite of their repairs policy rather than because of it (as it used to be).

I'm in the process of purchasing a used 861 and as things are, I feel that I'd be daft not to get the Health Check, but I do feel as if I'm being bent over a barrel and handing over the jar of vaseline sick

Hello

Count me in for my G91DH looks to be the same power supply as the other G series.

Be good if it could be brought in for under 250 quid.

I have a Lexicon MC-1, the PSU failed and had to be replaced, these things happen, do we have any statistics on how many 861 PSU's have failed against how many haven't? I think there is a lot of not unreasonable anxiety about the PSU's in 861's but it seems to be based on what might happen rather than what has happened, of course as soon as the individual gets the issue they are quite naturally disappointed and vocal about it, however if everything is ok then owners tend to say nothing, just my thoughts.

I await the replies from behind a bullet proof screen whistle
