Thanks Nick........interesting confirmation Even though we seem to be the only people with any interest in this topic I will add that a User would need a LOT of those "Various Artist" Albums in order to push their Overall Average Size north of ~420Mb. Anyway, thanks for the information; it's interesting how people's listening and buying habits are changing over time. Cheers

Even though we seem to be the only people with any interest in this topic I'm interested and have studied the graphs closely; but apart from posting my Sooloos stats I've not had anything else to contribute at this time. Regards, Carl PS #172368 - 2012-09-02 05:51 Your an early bird this Sunday.

Plus one again, you have plenty of readers out there. Chris:)

Ludwig may have a lot of classical which I guess may compress well as both flac and mp3. Could explain why his Album per TB is highest of the MP3=ON group. In fact there's a lot of jazz on it too (about 1/4 of the total). But either way, it's all a lot more acoustic than modern rock etc. I'm amazed how little space my stuff takes up! Looking at the table of various artist stats, it does suggest that jazz, blues and classical are amongst the smallest sets of files. Of course they could have less tracks but the track and runtime data doesn't really back that up. Music content complexity is therefore most likely the reason. So, it would seem that material type and age of album do have some bearing on likely HDD usage along with file type and resolution which are more obvious. Do we get a prize for perhaps the most visual thread here

But surely more complex content is going to produce larger files, not smaller ones?

Hmmmm OK; I see a can o'worms here. Perhaps complexity is the wrong word (especially as I have actually heard some of your work ). Maybe, extended passages of 'relatively' quieter music. I dunno even if I cannot articulate it my hunch 'feels' correct. Happy to digest other theories of course.

...extended passages of 'relatively' quieter music. I dunno even if I cannot articulate it my hunch 'feels' correct. Hi Nick, Sooloos stores FLAC files on the hard drive and FLAC is a lossless audio compression algorithm. I'm no expert in these algorithms but it would seem eminently sensible to replace a quite passage with a digital value and a repeat interval instead of many samples of 'nothing'. I would conclude that "quieter" music (say acoustic blues) would occupy a much smaller FLAC file for say a 5 minute track compared to say a classical symphony. I think I agree with your hunch too. I would hypothesize that a Jazz+Blues oriented collection would occupy less space to an Electronic/Rock. /Marcus
