I agree; it isn't likely to add up to enough difference.

We could do with a few more data points. Come On Sooloos HIKERS shows us ya stats wink

I'm feeling like it might be time to turn off MP3 transcoding ... and update my stats. I always use dBpa FLAC level 8 compression for my ripping. I suspect it is more about genre averages rather than FLAC -5 or FLAC -8 as the FLAC compression results are not that greatly smaller with the highest FLAC setting. Also legal DVD-A rips increase the averages in my case (and filled up my MC200 originally).

dBpa ripped HDCD's in 24bit also would increase the averages, so OCD Grateful Dead rippers probably have interesting statistics ..

it might be interesting to see high-level genre statistics and compare them to HH averages, 33% Rock, 25% Jazz, etc.

If you turn it off then leave your unit crunching away at all the deletes it needs to do. You might do a search of your store for .MP3 files and see what stats it gives you both before and after. Then you can also query to ensure they all go. I only did it once; recall it was not instant but the search did work to confirm they all did go.

Just for the record, I am still ripping so now have:

Artists: 366
Albums: 945
Tracks: 12837
MP3 Transcode : ON
Total Storage: 1969
Free Storage: 1536

Of the 945 albums:
I have 120 CD's ripped with dBpoweramp (with images and metadata in the FLAC files)
FLAC at Level 5

- Of the remaining ...
824 were ripped with EAC then imported to Sooloos
The remaining one was ripped with ControlPC

Maybe the average goes up when ripped externally to Sooloos?
/Marcus

I haven't ripped a single CD using Sooloos. It's all ripped in XLD.

Could that be something to do with my high albums:disc space ratio?

FWIW, I find that about 320Mb is a good average for the vast majority of CD Albums and about 950Mb to 1050Mb for High Res 24/96 Albums

Hi Ronnie, your figure for 96/24 is pretty much spot on with my averages.

96/24 and 88/24 are about the same at ~1000MB
176/24 and 192/24 are twice this which is to be expected.

44/16 FLAC average at ~350MB per album. This is a really mixed bag of old and new and many genres, so, might be a reasonable guide for majority of collections. Is also a large sample size.

44/24 FLAC are mostly decoded HDCD and as expected are larger than 44/16 (~500MB vs ~350MB). They have slightly higher average track count though, but, are still bigger if you factor that in (Suggest ~460MB per album)

48/16...I only have one of these and is the format that Ludwig found Control:PC and Contol:Mac cannot play.

This Playing time can then contrast with many more modern "Compilation" CD's, where up to 70+ minutes can be seen on occasion.

Hi Ronnie, I thought I'd test the theory. Below is a chart showing average CD length (minutes) in each year of release (as found in AMG data).

At least for my library it shows a shift from avg 45mins to 55mins over time. This matches with your 20mins per side of vinyl album comment.

I only went as far back as 1970 and assume the same pattern exists for earlier material. Release date on pre-CD albums is generally the release date of the original album. In the CD era the release date is either the CD release date or the original vinyl release date.

This may be of use if a user knows their CD collection swings to one end or the other of the timeline.

Thanks Nick......an interesting confirmation

As an aside, I might add that Artists in the 90's and beyond still only deliver "Albums" with about 50-55 minutes of Creative Content

What tends to move our averages is the relative proliferation of "Compilation" or "Best of" CD's many of which can approach 70 minutes. I believe that these kinds of CD's have become much more popular than our previous habits of buying the Artist's CD releases. However, this is just a hunch on my part, not something I can back up with any stats as such.

Yes, I agree with that. I'll check what the average is for just the Various Artist and other specific compilations.

Edit...Various artist stats.

A few of these may well be CD 1 and CD 2 within the same album, but, the point is proven I think.

Edit 2 ...added average track count. Overall library is ~13 tracks per album. These average 17 tracks per album and 467MB compared to 350MB for the overall library.
