What is your reason for wanting to replace one of your hard disks with an SSD? If the PC is new then your warranty could be affected, typically an ssd is fitted as it enables a quicker boot, tends to use less power, I believe the actual fitting is fairly straightforward, GB for GB SSD is more expensive.
Wait for Windows 8. Think that will boot faster. Programmes running faster, only if they do lots of disc io.
Biggest change noticed with my move to MacBook. Open the lid, and it's on - My old vista pc takes 5 mins to boot although I could probably get that it back to minute or so if I did a fresh install, but too much work. Ok, so mac is coming out of standby but it's still much faster and more reliable than my vista pc coming out of standby - which would also mysteriously come out of standby in the middle of the night and not get back to sleep - ruled out all the obvious reasons like updates, mouse moves, wol, etc
I think many people would benefit from a fresh install of windows just to keep things tidy. But its a lot of work. I think many of the improvements people see with ssd's are also as a result of the fresh install and over time, the machine will start to slow down again. There is no doubt that Windows (and i am seeing similar with my Mac) slow down over time. I look after pc's for other people. Sometimes I do a fresh install, especially if I am moving machine onto a domain. Even with really old kit, the difference is huge. AV software also has a big impact on boot up - some are much slower if it is downloading an update whilst machine is rebooting - more of a problem if pc is not used daily, especially if its also checking for other updates etc.
If someone knows how to stop my vista PC freezes for 60 seconds (almost exactly) when updates are installed, it would be eternally grateful. Its to do with shadow copies but I cannot seem to turn it off on vista.

I probably will leave it till Windows 8 comes out. BTY I moved from Vista to 7. Didnt like Vista, 7 seems very good. Not sure about 8 seems it will be totally different.
Some months ago I was wondering to change my 'old' Dell XPS1330 (3 year) with something new. After wondering a bit, I decided to replace its original HD for a SSD unit... WOW!! The thing awakes almost instant, and boots 4 or 5 fives faster (15-20 seconds insteado of over 1 minute). Everything is MUCH faster (specially the Windows updates). It is cool in the literal sense too (the HD gets the touchpad and keyboear area warm, now just ambient temp). And obviously the battery lasts longer. I am sure my decision was a good one, as said, on a (bit) old unit, in fact I am looking for an offer to put SSD OS drives in more computers around home (perfect for a music server!). On a new unit, I do not know what to say... other than after experimenting 'this', I will never buy another computer without a SSD OS drive! Regards

For work I have small SSD (80GB) for Windows and Program Files and my outlook mail files with most storage on a large normal drive.
It's really fast booting and restarting and program start up is faster, so it does seem a much snappier system.
In this case I didn't have the system without the drive so I can't really compare but all my colleagues swear by SSD for storing windows and swear at any system which doesn't have one.
So I'd advise get a small SSD and just store the system files on it.
2 cents...

I'm another who uses a SSD for the OS and spinners for the data. Does make the start-up faster.
For a really fast boot up find a MB that supports UEFI instead of the older BIOS.
