I am a current Meridian 500 series owner and will be upgrading to G98/G68 when the Meridian factory pulls its finger out and gets the kit in the stores. I would also like but cannot get a plasma screen (risk losing wife, although . . . . ) hence I want to get a projector that will do the Meridian justice for showing DVD's. Can anyone advise me what projectors to consider - or should I bite the bullet and move the wife out and the plasma sceen in? Many thanks.

Hello Bernie,
I would recommend the Sim2 top of the line DLP projectors for their outstanding picture, unbeaten connectivity, remote input box that can be ANY distance from the PJ with no signal degradation (optical fibre technology). Also Sim2 have endorsed the HDMI standard which is simply the best hi resolution connection you can have for the G68!

I would recommend the Sim2 projectors in the following order:

1. Sim2 HT500 LINK - 3 chip DLP2 projector, if you are sensitive to rainbows and dithering of any DLP projector and simply want the best picture there is in a compact case, this is the one to get! The LINK models have a separate input source slimline box that can be rackmounted if needed. Connected via optical fibre cable and has outstanding flora of inputs. Scaler and all processing takes place in this box, thus makes it possible to upgrade connectivity or processing like scaling and deinterlacing just by upgrading this box. HDMI connection makes it a perfect mate for the G68.

2. Sim2 HT300 LINK is top of the line single chip DLP2+ projector. Outstanding picture quality. Also features the excellent LINK processing and source input box. HDMI.

3. Sim2 HT300 XTRA has the same excellent optics and HD2+ display technology as the HT300 LINK but with the scaler and inputs on the PJ instead. It has a remote source input station as well as an option but not as good as the LINK. The HT300 Xtra will be upgraded to HDMI input on the main chassis during 2004.

Sharp 12000 is reported to be the best DLP ever and really makes CRT people to start think about getting rid of their godzilas [Linked Image from softronix.com].

well i guess it will hold this title untill more models will come out using the same chip.

Crion,
good choice but not for M products. Moste of the Sage DCDI is not for use with the scaling feature from M.
Where did you see the 500? With comparison you made?
HT-300 Link: at the moment the wrong primaries or maybe more worse wrong Color wheel. Not the new 7 segment dark green Wheel witch is a base and the Sim didnt offer
Same with xtra.

The Sims are very dim , compared to the Sharp Reflective power of screen with the HT-300 is~7ft Lambert and the Sharp has~11ft Lambert what is quite close to the specs for digital cinema (12ft Lambert)

The recommendation of the Sharp i rate much higher because it is HD-2+ and 7 segment colorwheel.

Best
Armin

Crion,
to clear my first state regarding DCDI: There is no need for a expensive Video processing in the projector because you have the same at the source (analogue) in for digital you dont have a need for any processing.
So why pay something double?

How much do you want to spend? I think most of the PJs mentioned above are in the price territory of plasmas. There are a few PJs in the 3-5k $(US) range that are supposed to be pretty good for the money.

Jerry, problem with the plasma is size rather than cost. Projector can be put away while not in use. Having said that, I guess I would not want to spend much more than 5K. Thanks

I saw the Benq 8700. That one is affordable (4000 Euro) and looks very good.
For around 10.000 Euro i would choose the Marantz VP12S3 i think.
I saw Seleco HT300 next to VP12S2 and we could not get a picture from the HT300 that came near of the Marantz. (used a good color analyzer etc)

Remember you need a screen as well.. (price wise, and that will stay visable as well)

I recently bought one of the new Sanyo PLV-Z2 (commonly known as just the Sanyo Z2) LCD projectors and I am stunned by the picture quality for the price.

It's a 1280x720 native resolution 16:9 projector for $2000 (I paid $1850 inc shipping), has plenty of brightness and a DVI-HDCP port as well as component and VGA etc.

One of the features that only Sanyo seems to have is the "lens shift" which is two wheels on the front that move the screen up and down by 1/2 screen height and left and right by half width without adding keystoning (making the picture no longer a pure 16:9 rectangle). This allows for non-accurate installation but having a perfectly aligned picture! Great for when you have to mount it on a coffee table for example, like me for the time being.

(I think Stacey recommended this pj in another thread too, for the money)

David.

Jaco,
think about DCDI in the M. As a next step explain me please what its worth to spend 6K more for the Marantz instead of the BenQ?
I measured both. The primarys are good at both, brightness a click better for the BenQ, grayscale control brilliant on both.

I just went from CRT: NEC XG 85 with Vigatec scaler via SDI to the new Marantz VP12 S3 in anticipation of my G68 and G98. Have yet to receive them, but I am more then happy. This will be the winning combo for me. I know from many other DLP reviewers that it is down to the Sharp 12000 and the Marantz VP12 S3. When squeezed for a choice, people tended to prefer the Marantz, but for more money I think. It also has the auto color calibrator, a nice feature. I am very happy with it.

I dont blame you- projection still produces a bigger image. size matters!

But- projector put away?!!!!!

How- taken off coffee table? Then you have to re-align it.

Put into projector booth at rear of room? doable- but you have to deal with throw distances.

Motorized screen? Doable- but I dont like them becuase I worry the motor will burn out and I also worry about slight alignment issues.

How about one of the newer ultra large RPTVs? They are very expensive - I think they would cost you around 2x what you want to spend. But they are big and bright. Depreciation would be major on this though.

Another question is what kind of room is this- dedicated theater? Living/family room? How much control over light do you have. If it is a living/family room as I suspect- I would reconsider the plasma or an inexpensive projector. Ultimate performance may not be possible, so why pay for it?

Best regards,
Jerry
