I think it'll depend on how many sources you have.
I have a very basic setup in my bedroom. It's a Squeezebox Touch to Roksan poweramp to B&W speakers.

As the SBT is the only source I'm running, I have completely bypassed the pre-amp. It's probably not the best way to run it for sound quality, but it works. And I don't do any critical listening on this system either.
