True, but then I would soon run out of storage with 3TB drives in the MD600.

With two 3Tb drives in it, the MD600 can be configured either to offer 3TB mirrored storage, or 6Tb unmirrored storage, which would fulfil your needs as far as I can see.

You would need at least 6Tb of backup somewhere on your network as well.

This trick can't be done with the TwinStore, which can only offer mirrored storage (and can't run a core).

Point well taken, but I'd rather have the mirrored backup and I don't need to run a core.

I didn't actually realize the MD600 could run 3TB drives - thought 2TB was the max. Ratsenfratzen #$%&*$%. Would have gone that way. I wonder, as drives eventually fail, whether one could replace one of the 2TB drives with a 3TB, and then subsequently the other one; versus having to replace both at the same time if changing storage size?

Yes - the drives have to be identical capacity though not necessarily from the same manufacturer.
I haven't tested this statement but I guess it's true.

Going back to TwinStores, if one of the present 2 TB drives was replaced with a 3 TB drive wouldn't it be recognised by the RAID system as needing data so that would be transferred from the old 2 TB still in residence? Once that was completed replace the second 2 TB HDD with a 3 TB unit to repeat the process OR, as others have suggested, configure it so the unit had 6 TB capacity. As long as regular backups were done that should work fine and would certainly be the cheapest way out of having 6 TB capacity.

This sounds like the most logical way to do this. (Providing it works.)

OR

Can I take 2TB drives out of the original TwinStore, copy them via my computer to the 3TB drives, Then put the 3TB drives into the TwinStore?

You have to keep in mind 3 things:

1) Put a HDD into a store and it will reformat.

2) TwinStores cannot do Raid 0.

3) Raid 1 needs the same size HDD otherwise they don't work. (AFAIK)

Right.

So copying them via my computer would be the best bet?

I once tried to put 1 2 TB and 1 TB drive into my TwinStore and it wouldn't finish booting, just beeped like crazy. YMMV.

You should backup via the official ControlMac/ControlPC backup functionality with the smaller drive loaded, and then shutdown the TwinStore, load the larger blank drives, and then use ControlMac/ControlPC to reload the backup into the now blank drives. That's how I migrated from a 1 TB mirrored store to 2 TB mirrored store.

It would be neat if it did; unfortunately the Sooloos system RAID requires identically sized drives.

Carl
