Hi Nick

Could be interested in the psu change/upgrade? But I would need to audition it, hard to commit to a change based on other people's thoughts. Excellent work and documenting by yourself though and it makes interesting reading.

Hi Nick

Count me in...I'd definitely install one to assess versus the standard XP Power SMPS.

Cheers

Hi Nick

I may well be interested, I have a G68D, circa 2005.

Nail on head time, what sort of cost are you talking?

Many thanks

Jon

That sounds like a "yes" then! I've bought my first batch of CP498's, but I'd like to trial my new solder gun before setting a firm price. The wiring took a long time with soldering irons, but I'm hopng this will make it quicker. If it works out well, it should cost about 200, but let me confirm that first.

Hi Steve,

I'm using my 861V4/LPS with DSP6000s, but I don't have a controller with SMPS to compare any more.

KCLee replaced his G68 SMPS with a very nice external LPS - have a look at his posts:

I have modified my G68 with a Condor CP498A PSU using an external chassis, resulting in a much better SQ and more clear sound stage.

Hi Nick

I am also interested in a drop in replacement for an 861 v6 psu.
My 861 is in a cabinet with not too much ventilation.

Would the linear PSU generate a lot more heat than the standard one?

Hi Colin,

I think people sometimes associate linear supplies with linear amplifiers, and SMPS with switching amplifiers. There's nothing intrinsically inefficient with linear supplies, they're just bigger, heavier and more expensive. SMPS are generally more efficient, but not like switching amplifiers are more efficient. There IS more heat generated, but then most of the heat is generated by the controller itself anyway. I found that the linear supply reaches thermal equilibrium at about the same temperature as the rest of the controller. So there is more heat, but not too much more. I hope that answers the question? If you want to more information, there are several posts throughout this thread where I've given power load and disipation measurements.

BR, Nick
