I just got my first Meridian. A 568.2 (which I believe is an MM because on the display screen it says 568.2m) So I've gone though most of the setup and calibration. The weird problem is that I finally figured out how to get the digital SPDIF to work with films and CD.

However, when I use the analog inputs for radio or TV, I am only getting sound in the center channel. When I change to other surroundish settings, still in the center, but when I switch to direct or stereo, it's dead silent.

Any hints on what I am doing wrong? I'm sure it's something simple.

Thanks!

Figured it out. It wasn't set to 2.0 A

I hope this just didn't set the entire machine to 2.0 lol

Still figuring all of this out, but I will say for those who wonder if a Meridian can hang with new processors and the like, I just went from a Krell to a 568.2 and I am floored.

One question though. Was there a 568.2m in addition to the mm?

When I hit display it says it's a 568.2m and it does have the 2.5 firmware. I am just wondering if I got lucky, and the guy sold me an MM.

No, there was no "m" version.

You'll find all the details in Duncan's Meridian Info site (link at the top of the page), and MrMarbach has given you details of how to tell whether you have the mm version in your other thread.

Be aware that Trifield width will not work with the 2.5b9 beta firmware. This can be fixed but at your own risk: https://www.meridianunplugged.com/u...width+568.2mm&Search=true#Post156459

There are also "darker" arts that can be applied to the 568.2mm. Feel free to PM me and we can discuss.

Read the manual, read the manual, read the manual. Make sure you understand types. If you don't, experiment and re-read the manual.

Meridian kit is unlike most hifi. You need to understand how to map logical functions onto physical functions; ie logical sources on MSR with physical inputs on rear or logical 5.1 audio with physical speaker analogue/digital outputs on the rear. Likewise DSP settings are different for different inputs, or between music and movies for the same source.

Once the penny drops, it's all quite simple and logical, but if you are not thinking the Meridian way, you won't get it.

Hi AngryGM

Glad you are enjoying your new toy! You do need to spend a lot of time familiarising yourself with how Meridian gear works, and I'd suggest that you do that via the manuals and just enjoy the music for a good few weeks/months before you start to do anything with Firmware revisions. Otherwise you will be juggling so many set-up variables, you'll spend many hours with the system misbehaving or apparently bricked and doing absolutely nothing. We've all been there! As Dpstjp suggests, there's plenty fun and tinkering to be had in future, but acclimatise first!

Cheers

George

The following website shows me a Meridian 568.2 Digital Surround Processor. It is packaged in the original Meridian box and has manuals. I'm curious if you got any manuals. There appears to be more than one manual, there are quite a few items as well.

Here is the link that is from soundsgoodtomehouston.com .

That's a 568 upgraded to 568.2mm spec with spurious other items not all related to the processor. I don't know how old the ad is, but it's possibly over priced.

Oops, just read the ad which does confirm that it's an upgrade but does not realise that it's a .mm

Maybe I am lucky and have an MM then. I am pretty sure there are two rs-232 looking plugs on the back.

Sort of.

MHR is an encrypted Meridian protocol which provides copy protection but also has the benefit of apparently improving sound quality by decorrelating jitter from audio. Most modern Meridian components support MHR either by decoding it, such as in speakers and digital inputs, or encrypting it, as in sources or processors. Meridian use to encrypt all high resolution output with MHR but I think that may have changed now.

The .mm as in the 568.2mm refers to multi channel MHR Smartlink, a method of bridging multiple digital inputs to allow discreet multi channel input up to 6 discreet channels. The 'smart' also refers to the fact that additional meta data is incorporated to allow the source to tell down stream devices what type of audio is being transmitted - music, movies, 5.1 etc.

On the 568.2mm, the Smartlink interface was via a VGA style connector (top left of rear of unit) due to space constraints of otherwise needing 3x digital coax inputs. Otherwise MHR Smartlink is simply bridging 3 standard digital inputs which are typically configured in setup to run in multi channel mode. In UK, the .mm upgrade was 400 and could only be fitted to a 568.2.

The multi channel link does not have to be MHR encrypted and may be standard PCM.

On the flagship 861v6 processor, MMHR is available allowing 8 channels of discreet input to support 7.1 discreet audio. The only device currently that offers MMHR output is the HD621 HDMI to MHR/MMHR processor.

MMHR is currently not supported on G series, limiting this range to 6 channels of discreet digital audio.

Ian,what I previously stated is supported by Meridian Audio Ltd since it is on their website. Hunt for it! smile

Angry, I'm glad you like CDs as much as I do! grin I'll send you a PM later. I have a busy schedule today not much time for play.

P.S. The website I displayed was mainly for pictures only to find out what Angry bought. I personally don't tell people over the internet what I have since my lawyer has advised me not to. Thank you.

Hi Consumer,

That website is 'Copyright 2004 Sounds Good To Me' so it's well old and not maintained, hence ignore the price.
If your looking for photos and information you do a lot better looking for it over on Duncan's site.

Are you thinking of buying a 568.2mm? They are a great price these days. What Meridian (or non-M) kit do you have to match it up to?

Regards,
Carl
