Meridian seemed to have dropped the G Series CD & DVD transports/players, including the 800v4. Is it a signal that a Multi Format Bluray Player will be introduced in both the G & 800 Series?

I'd suggest not. Personally I think it's a move away from moving parts and the servicing implications, as much as anticipating market trends for streaming music.

I'd also doubt it.

With Blu-ray I can't see how Meridian could find a niche. It's not practical for them to re-implement the whole Blu-ray spec (like they did with Dolby Digital) to claim an improvement. It would just be off the shelf decoders so similar in performance to any number of other manufacturers.

Plus, for most customers there's no analogue stage at all so there's nothing there they could push there either.

The best they could do is put the guts of an Oppo in a Meridian box with Meridian comms and maybe MHR outputs and sell it for a modest premium (Oppo + 300 max). Don't even try to claim it's something it's not (cough)Lexicon(/cough)

Just a sign that disc are dead (or slowly dying). No more big name players I would say.
818 replaces the 808, MS600 and MC200 replace the G series players.
That is the future, and with the exception of a lack of 5.1 support, they have it spot on.

Ahem! I understood that FLAC supported 7.1.

Let's not undersell ourselves. M's next shot at FLAC needs to support the MAXIMUM capability of the format, not the "standard" presentation.

If the processor kit doesn't support it, so be it, but at least they've future-proofed themselves this time.

If M goes back to 2.0 only it would be very strange.
I always thought we needed more than 2 physical channels to listen to reproduction of real sound.

And all that streaming is 2 channel only ?

Well, we are all going to have to PLAGUE our Dealers to try and get Multi-Channel enabled on Sooloos systems

Per Roland at Bristol, he said that Multi-Channel was really only a Niche requirement of a small percentage of Meridian buyers........and that while Meridian would like to do it, as they have always supported Multi-Channel Audio, he didn't think that Meridian would take the Multi-Channel route with Sooloos, as it would not add any significant new business

He maintained that Meridian have many things that they want to Improve and Add to Sooloos.......but that Multi-Channel was well down that list

The only way to bring it up that list is for Users here and elsewhere to PLAGUE their Dealers for Multi-Channel Sooloos Options.........only then might they consider it

Interesting. I've just looked at Meridian's website & the only disc player they now list is the 808.3. End of an era eh?
I still quite like discs but maybe that's my age! Interesting article in What Hi Fi this month entitled "Streaming: Death to discs?" quoting the % drop in disc sales etc and the growth in downloads. All sounds fine but they point out that in South Korea (which has the world's fastest broadband network with average speeds of 16.7mb vs 5.1 in the UK), the rise in smart TVs means they might have to throttle broadband provision as they just don't have the infrastructure to cope with demand.
Streaming is all well & good but if we all decide we want to download the extended LOTR trilogy in 1080p, there might not be enough bandwidth for me to dial 999!

One day all devices will be discless and the only way of getting media into our libraries will be via repurchasing via downloads wink

I think there is a bit of confusion between "downloads" and "streaming". The latter requires huge bandwidth "right now" to work whereas background saving of a large file and then playback from your local HDD does not.
