What a fantastic post! Thanks. Maybe that is the issue with my 596P that sometimes does not play DVD's

Snmhaines is spot on. Adjusting the disc tray alignment and height can solve a skipping problem.

Also I know it looks cosmetic but that little black plastic cap on the disc motor is there for a reason!!. If its missing you could have problems. It helps locate the puck.

What adhesive do you recommend using to stick the black cap on the motor spindle? The replacement mechanisms I've had do not come with it so I had to remove the old one and stick it on the new drive using clear silicone.

Trying to remember. It was a clear type of locktite. Also it has to be central as it can cause problems

Hi. I tend to agree. The disc height was causing problems with the inner part of the disc, so very slight lowering helped. Another is actually more vital, which is the metal disc on top which must be some stabilizer. The plastic cap slots into it and centers it. To me it's a must.
