Since submitting this post, I have tried several times to recreate the problem from scratch, but have thus far been unable to do so. I now have no idea what state I put the new app into, or how. But as I wrote, the solution was to use the original app to delete the queue. Sorry for the misinformation.

I stumbled across an irregular behavior yesterday.
Used the new app to start playing all tracks in a disk. Returned the iPad to its home screen and shut it down. Towards the end of the disk, I reopened the iPad and then the new app. It immediately recognized my MC200, but then sat interminably with "loading playlist" on the screen. The original app opened fine and showed the queue fine.

Deleting the queue with the old app restored normal function to the new app. Work around is not to bail out of the new app during a listening session; closing and reopening the iPad (i.e. not returning to iPad home screen before closing the iPad) seems fine though.
