JB568,
here is the information you requested (from June 30, 2001)

http://www.softronix.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000557.html Here is a quote from an email I received from Mr. Robert Stuart:
Q. Why are there Centre EQ settings?
A. Centre EQ is a unique function in the Meridian processors and illustrates
the thinking behind our designs. Centre EQ provides a psychoacoustic
function to compensate the timbre when using a real centre speaker on
content that may have been mastered for phantom (e.g. two-speaker stereo).
Explanation. Most music CDs are mixed for 2 speakers.
We prefer to replay such recordings in Trifield or Music modes. Part of
getting it right is understanding how the human listener perceives a phantom
centre compared with a real one.
The human auditory system presents a different frequency response for sounds
coming from different directions (this is one way we can tell direction) and
so the timbre of a centre image created only by left and right speakers will
be different from the same sound actually arriving from centre front.
The EQ1 and 2 settings provide difference functions so that the real centre
has similar timbre to a phantom. The two choices allow for human and
speaker-angle variation and are selected by listening.
Centre EQ is not provided in discrete or Logic modes because the assumption
is that the mastering engineer was using a centre speaker.
No doubt we will have other interesting features like this to add in the
future.
Happy listening.
All I can say is: center channel eq mystery, no more
