Hi there - is the VE-12 actually available yet? I was about to give-up hope...

Stacey,

I am glad that you decided to tell the truth about the Teranex. There is so much hype about some of these products from both people with conflicts of interest and self-styled experts who have never seen one.

Although I think that it is somewhat better than your description, it is still seriously flawed. All the advanced hardware in the world can`t help you if the software is poor. It is really a shame because the Teranex hardware can support very high quality motion compensated processing, both de-interlacing and frame rate conversion, yet many of the conversions are only linear…no better than bob and weave.

I have my unit for two years now and have given up hope that Teranex will finally write good software.

Stacey,

no matter if you like the Teranex or not, or think it's overpriced (I think it is, for what it offers), to my knowledge it's the only scaler with proper 48Hz support.

Any idea when we will see the FLI23xxBC in an external scaler for those of us, that already have a pj?

I still have hope that the iScan HD will be what I've been looking for for a long time.
A HTPC sure is nice, but not something that I personally want to use all the time.

What are the HDMI licensing costs?
From what was posted at avs the costs are:
Annual Licensing fee $15,000
Number of Key Sets $1000

And all the HDMI doesn't help us crt users at all, since we can't connect it to our pjs.

Even if such a high-end scaler would be available in the near future, it wouldn't be legal to have a RGB/HV output on it.

Which leads me to having to replace the pj... but quality wise, with what?

And while you're here, any idea if the new G-Series player still has the chroma bug?

The truth is the Teranex can't do motion-comp. It is motion-adaptive only. The S&W Alchemist offers Mo-comp. Samsung will be using one at CES.

The FRC, which gives you 48 Hz on the T is really bad. We have a simple scrolling text pattern that goes from large to small and the Ternaex really looses it. A PC does a better, much better.

The M has the FLI23xxBC or BD in it, so in theory they could add 48 Hz.

We did a test at work with the T. We fed in 1080p/24 and output 1080p/24. There were lines missing. It actually scaled the image and cropped part of it off. They filter chroma resolution. (cut it in half)

Their engineer turn over rate is pretty high too. We keep getting software updates as we report problems.

For the record, a PC cannot ensure you get proper 2-2 or 3-3. We have a new test pattern on WHQL Test Annex 3 that shows this. You might get 2-2 or 3-1. You might get 3-3 or 4-2, etc...

I almost forgot, the new Pioneer Plasmas with HDMI also offer 72 Hz as an option. It is off by default because it gets really ugly on bad edits and video.

So certain models of the IF5700, the upcoming 7205 and the Pioneer Plasmas will all run at either 48 Hz or 72 Hz. (the DLPs will be 48 Hz) Early 5700s listed the 2-2 feature, but they used the AB rev of the chip, which would also give you 3-1 or 2-2. BC added the ability to lock. When it hits a bad edit, it still drops to video at 48 Hz. Not sure how that looks yet, but should be able to tell with Avia Pro.

The 48Hz on the Teranex looked good to me at the time I've seen it. Can't compare this now, as I don't have access to one and I doubt there's a dealer in germany that has one.

48Hz is also only interesting to me on film-material, not on video. Bad edits are an issue, yes. We'll see how future scalers handle this.

The Teranex 48fps format is interlaced, not progressive. It is derived from 24sf: segmented frame. When sent though a video DAC, the result is 48i, with both fields at the same time reference. The 24sf format was devised so that production equipment that can handle only interlaced video could be used. The Teranex can`t do 48fps progressive, or any other format that is not part of the ATSC spec.

If HD-DVD is progressive, then we don't need de-interlacing and motion comp, etc... correct? Well, then the answer at this point is HD-DVD or bust... but then again, the HD-DVD player will have to have built in de-interlacing and/or 480i output for backward compatability for standard DVD.

At least this time, all HD-DVD players will be allowed by the 'DVD-Forum' to upconvert standard DVD, meaning all digital internal de-interlacing and scaling by all standard DVD's played on an HD-DVD player. That gives lots of reason to justify an *early* purchase of an HD-DVD player.

Chris, while they might scale, don't expect this with an analog output. HD-DVD will most likely require HDMI for the HD rates.

I seen not much interest in the Immersive SDI output card..

I might now try to get the schematics of the backplane slot, to put a SDI mod on a Meridian VE10,11 or 12 card.

Is there someone with a SDI output card who wants to look at that for me, and possible send me a digital photo ? (hopefully not a multi layer card..)
Seems not too hard, 8 data lines, some gound(s) and +x volts.

I doubt Meridian will be of any help here..
Perhaps Immersive themsleves can help.

Take a look at your analog output card in the 800 and the datasheet for the video encoder part. You can quickly locate all of the necessary pins.

iScan is making a new scaler that has exactly the specs I've been waiting for (comp. and SDI input, 48 and 72Hz output).

Anyone here know how to or where to get a Meridian 596/598 SDI mod?

new iScan HD Scaler: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=338670

DIY SDI mods: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47128

thanks
