Just moved to a G68/G98/HD621 set up and my brain aches from getting used to the MConfig after the older legacy program. I have managed to get almost everything working first time and feeling pretty pleased with myself! Helped in spades by years of reading HH, many thanks for all the help and advice I've absorbed over the years.
I'm saving to add a Bluray player in the near future and currently my old Humax PVR and a DVD-R are fed into the G98 to use the internal scaler to then feed video on HDMI out of the G98, via the HD621, so that I only have to have a HDMI feed to my plasma.
DVD from the G98 is full-screen but the older SD sources fed through the G98 scaler are squashed to 4x3 in the centre of the screen with black bars either side. The settings I'm using seem correct to me, display aspect 16x9, scaler display aspect 16x9 and the SD sources are set to output to a 16x9 screen over component.
I've tried so many different settings of almost every variable that I'm unsure what I've missed! Is this a "feature" or has anybody else had the same problem and knows what settings I need to change?
Thanks in advance
Richard

Just a thought, as I understand things your better off feeding the HDMI sources to the HD621 and the HDMI output to your display. The audio from the HD621 is fed to your processor. You may want to also connect the SPDIF from your sources to the procesor as well, then you can compare audio striped from the HDMI (by the HD621)against audio straight from your sources. Keep it simple and go from there. Good Luck, Chris

Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

Thanks Chris. Oddly whilst your answer doesn't help with the problem I was having, a newer Humax PVR with HDMI out is dropping the audio and I think I'll try exactly what you suggest and hook up the digital audio out direct to the G68. I was just trying to keep the wire count down. And of course it should work as it's connected! The astute might ask why 2 PVRs and the answer is I still have some stuff to watch on the old one!
The answer to my earlier question seems to be switching the scaler display aspect to "native" but why that should work I don't really understand and I'm about saturated with it just now.
Regards
Richard

RIchard,
Another thing to play with is to compare the scaling of the G98 to that in your TV and see if one is better than the other. (i.e. scaling done in the G98 and passing the TV 1080p etc versus passing the TV an unscaled signal and letting the TV scaler do the work.) You should be able to switch using the G98's on-screen menus to test. Cheers,
Ed.

On this subject, I never found the built in scaler in the G98 to be very good. It is very old technology these days. My Oppo BD83 is light years ahead in PQ upsampling SD DVDs.
I output SD from the G98 to my projector and it does the business.
