Looking at all the new products lately, it is very clear that Meridian is reusing their technology into new products.

818 looks basically a 808.3 with an hybrid OA08/OA18 card and no CD player. Some changes to the ID40 made yes. Changed power supply and voila we have a new product. (So the 818 is why the 808.2 'i' version did not appear as a 808.3i ? ... forward thinking by Meridian ...). Very clever because this is what the audio community wants and for Meridian also because they can sell 2 products instead of 1.

M6 looks very much based on the 3200. Different casing and some light in the top.

The 808.3 was launched when Meridian were streamlining and simplifying their range. So the preamp (previously "i") version was the only version. This both made production easier and cheaper and simplified understanding for dealers and customers alike.

Is it just me or is the 818 a little short on co-axial inputs? Three would get quickly used up by a satellite receiver, a DAB receiver and a CD player. I really would like to see a DAB card for the 800 series too.

How much DAB would you need that cannot be had via the web/Sooloos?

It's the same number as in the 808. There are also two Toslinks.

MC200, Twinstore, 808v6/ID41 -> DSP8000SE (+ SB Touch, Sony BDP-3300, SKYHD, legacy cassette player)
2nd system: MC200 analogue out, Linn LP12, SB3 -> Quad 34 -> M60 rosewood

According to the datasheet, and the drawing of the back, there are five toslinks.

In other words:

3x Coaxial SPDIF
5x Toslink optical
3x SpeakerLink
1x High-resolution USB

(I wonder if the USB is finally asynchronous (unlike in G-series).)

Ah! Of course you're right. I looked at the drawing and didn't read the spec; and failed to notice the input board on the right next to the ID41. I just noticed the slot on the left where the 808's is. So all those digital inputs should be enough for anyone.

I guess it is just me then. But my use case exploited all the coaxial inputs even before I started to consider more esoteric sources. Five coaxial SPDIFs would be a minimum for me. Especially so since this seems to be a gateway product designed for those who wish to combine Sooloos with conventional amplification/speakers set-ups.

Don't any of your sources have optical output?
