Quite true. At the time, building one of these was a little less than $10K in parts, plus a lot of time to get the software exactly the way I wanted it.

Many Meridian customers prefer high-end items, where the cost of one of these servers would be a small percentage of an overall system, and I believe that a reasonable number of those customers are perfectly happy to have a dealer / installer set the whole system up and configure it, so I thought it might be interesting to show what could be done on the high end.
