With his recent offering, on one level, Erwin actually threw away Meridian intellectual property and replaced it with his own. Did he infringe Meridian IP by figuring out which bit he wanted to chuck away?

Arguably, transplanting the 5200 filter was the worse transgression, because it put Meridian IP in products that Meridian had not intended it to go. For example, did Meridian lose a single G68SL sale because someone had used transplanted apodizing firmware instead?

Noting VK's request for circumspection in post five of this thread, I believe that the hypothetical user posited by Ronnie would have infringed Meridian's IP.

Point noted Jon. However, this thread has (so far) turned into quite a mature discussion.

It's important to know where we stand on these issues as individuals and as a collective "forum". If we wish to maintain (or at least strive for) a cordial and productive relationship with Meridian, we need to balance our "rights" with Meridian's rights and wishes.

Thanks Gianni - Didn't take the full implication of that post on board. Have modified mine.

Cheers

Let's look at this from another angle a moment.

A few years ago many here were more than happy to part with cash for hardware mods to DVDO Edges, Cluxs and Oppo blu-ray players to enable access to the hi-def soundtrack. To my knowledge no one batted an eye-lid at this at the time - maybe because there was no other solution to the problem.

Now what if, in order to make the mod work, a firmware tweak had been involved - how would have people felt then?

I suspect that, again, there would not have been many complaints - it is not as though there was another DVDO model that offered the functionality, for example.

When Erwin first released his tool to copy Meridian's Apodizing filter into our processors nobody batted an eye...until Meridian posted displeasure in that act.

That's why people didn't care when we were installing 3xSPDIF cards in our players. Nobody complained. Now it's a big issue because we caused Meridian pain.

Keep in mind Meridian could have stopped it from happening and they said nothing. So this is all their fault! They could have stopped it. Why didn't they you ask? Because they don't listen to us!

I am not bashing...just trying to make a point.

I don't think we should encourage our viewing audience that jailbreaking or tweaking Apple products is an "ok" thing to do.

Mods, am I correct in thinking that Meridian were indeed contacted re the Apo-update before it was posted here, and that they were disinterested?

Cheers

This was raised (at least) with one senior member of Meridian (not Bob) at the HH "2.5" event in Bristol earlier in the year. The response was along the lines of "we don't care what you do". I suspect that said individual should not have given that response and/or didn't appreciate what was being done and/or didn't pass the information on to Bob (and the R&D team, in general).

Just to clarify the Dates involved........

The HH 2.5 Event was on the Saturday afternoon, February 26th 2011.......it was at this event that the potential Update was raised with the Meridian Senior Member.........(it MAY also have been raised prior to that by PM or other means.......Mods can clarify)

I believe that the Thread outlining the availability of the Apodizing Firmware Mod went "live" on the HH Site on the following morning, Sunday February 27th........less than 24 hours after the issue being raised "face to face" at Bristol

Meridian's (Bob's) message went up on the HH Site at about 9am on the following Friday, March 4th.........about 5 days after the Apodizing Mod became available

This is correct, Meridian senior staff were advised at the Bristol event and showed little interest. However, a few days after posting on here Bob became aware and then it was a different matter. IMHO the Meridian staff at Bristol were indifferent one might even say dismissive and much of this fallout could have been avoided with better communication from them both internally and externally.

Regards,
Carl

You might clarify the following

a) That Email Enquiries to Meridian Personnel prior to Bristol had gone UNANSWERED...........no Responses whatsoever.........whether indicating Objection or Tacit Acceptance??

b) That this in turn prompted the issue being raised face to face with Roland at Bristol??

c) That the Apodizing Firmware Mod information went live less than 24 hours after the face to face at the Meridian Bristol Event??
