I'm reclaiming my system from Spongebob!

It came a point where my big system was mostly used to watch Spongebob, and not much else. After the firmware update on my 861v4 yesterday (*thank you very much*) I'm reclaiming my system. As most have mentioned, the sound is fantastic; very smooth, with huge presence and separation, detail but not bright... WOW. With all our miss givens about Meridian's direction and actions of late, this is a breath of fresh air, the kit sounds better than ever.

It is impossible to think this was a mere update, this goes beyond the width fix, this is truly magnificent.

I don't know how much improvement would be achieved when the speakers are updated, but for now, I'm (rediscovering) enjoying the music.

Plasmatico,

Do update you speakers ASAP - that is my experience.

Robert

But bear in mind that I was only referring to updating my speakers that were fed directly by my 808v3. I think this has a bearing on our respective conclusions.

Oppo 93EU / FM radio > HD621 > 861v6 > 8k(non-SL) x 4 + 5k2SL x 3 + D2500

In general, the firmware updates to the 861 and speakers have brought greater clarity and precision and are thoroughly worthwhile.

Listening to a CD on DSP Direct does not have the same scale or impact of the other system (808.3 > 8kSLs). Using SPDIF from Oppo to 861 is better than via HDMI to HD621 and 861. I am not going to dismantle things to see what the 808 into 861 sounds like!

Anyway, well done Meridian.

I'm relaying on kind hearts, so I'm hoping the update can be done soon. Can wait really, as the improvement on the 861 is remarkable.

Hi Asa
Can you elaborate on your statement above please???

As I understand it, you are essentially comparing

** an 808.3 feeding 2 by D8k-SL's............versus

** an 861v6 feeding 2 by D8k using the Direct Preset

Is that correct??

If so, would you are to elaborate on what you think the reasons might be??

Edit: What is the CD Source in this situation???........the Oppo via Coax??

Thanks

Hello friends,

I've just bought MC200 and I'm thinking about getting a ID40 card at the same time I get the firmware upgrade. Do you think I'll have a significant improvement in stereo, even using analogue speakers?

I am finally using Trifield consistently! Earlier I would experiment with it every once in a while and give up. Trifield was LOUD and boomy and in general a bad experience.

Since all the firmware was applied at one go, can't really say whether it is the speakers or the 861, but there has overall been an improvement.

Something just to try......

Try setting the Width to 1.3 to 1.5

Try string the Depth to +1.5 to +2.5

See what you think
