I note you put proof in quotes so I'll go easy Thanks! So, if I understand correctly, 2 identical files (same checksum, ripped 2 ways from same CD) played through the same system (cables etc.) from the same harddrive cannot sound any different. That's what I would have expected; but Martin seems to be able to hear differences and clearly is in contact with others that seem to hear the same things. What could be going on - apart from snake oil? If the observed differences are so large it should be possible to 'measure' the differences somehow. Or? Chris

If you believe bits is bits, can there be a sound quality difference in a "bit perfect" ALAC rip versus an AIFF "bit perfect" rip, as asserted to me by the gents who modded a mac mini for me. They also sell external hard drives.

They also sell external hard drives. Doesn't it depend on whether the ALAC codec is genuinely 100% lossless or not (i.e. do you get a bit perfect file after coding and decoding), and whether the decoding from the compressed format to the uncompressed results in more jitter than reading out the AIFF file to PCM stream? If everything works as it should the two should be indistinguishable.

They also sell external hard drives. If you converted them both to the same file format such as WAV or FLAC and did the appropriate comparison then you should be able to find your answer. Cheers Tom

I will take this as a resounding no from everyone on my original question then.
I would experiment myself but I don't think my replay chain is transparent enough, as other than my CD player I just have a mac mini linked up to a V-DAC via optical that is clearly inferior to the CD player so unlikely to show and difference in rips.
Not wishing to fan the flames too much but just because we can't explain something at first, doesn't mean it isn't happening. Scientific progress would be rather stunted if that were the case.

I'm still stuck trying to understand what a 15-20% improvement means (via any change to a hifi in any way).
I usually find it's small difficult-to-define degrees only.
