So the question is what does bit identical mean, - it appears that checksum isn't enough to say the files are identical?

I too have great respect for Martin and trust him to be accurate in what he's hearing (and I think he does admit he doesn't understand what's happening).

I wonder if file fragmentation is important here - I guess the more it's copied the more likely it is to be fragmented.

Anyway another yet more 'proof' that "bits ain't bits"
